Wouldn't it be amazing to see this as it happens?

https://twitter.com/TheWorldStories/status/802953688025354244

I have been lucky enough to watch the Moon rise from the Ocean, from Huntington Beach years ago. The moon was far bigger than in this photograph, and so very orange. I wish I had had a camera than.

Enjoy the stroke of luck, this photographer had!

is one of several sites that show exactly when the moon (and other things) rise and set. Once you've figured out just where it will rise, set up and wait. This is a crescent moon, so the photographer had to play with exposures to get that red shadow in.

I have a few favorite spots for sunrises over the Atlantic, now this gives me an idea for moonrises.

(sunsets, too)

Well worth an R&K!

BTW, I think you did not see a moonrise from a west coast beach, but a moonset. No matter.

Always love your posts.

and ended up like a shiny Dime in the sky. It was something I will never forget. Because looking out towards the Horizon, I saw this orange hump rise up out of the Ocean, and wondered what it was until I realized it was the Moon. Yes the Sun may set in the West, But I think the Moon has its own orbit and quit possible to rise from the Sea like Venus!

The Earth rotates one direction every 24 hours and everything in the sky rises in the east, the moon included.

At no time does it rise in the west.

Unless you were looking more or less eastward at the moon, you cannot have been seeing it rise.

However, although I have visited Huntington Beach (the town) I have no knowledge of the geography there. You might very well have had a east view of a moon rise, possibly over a bay or inlet.

However, the moon always rises in the east and sets in the west on our planet.

Sorry for my pedantry, but that's astronomy 101.

As always, my best to you.

Hope things are well with you and yours.
☺️

That would splain it!

When I lived in CA, I loved seeing the ocean. As a Michigander, I was already used to seeing sunrise and sunset over water, of which we have plenty here.

And yes, the sun and moon low over water makes for stunning pictures.

11. I used to have a funny story about "Michigan"
Thu Dec 29, 2016, 12:05 PM
Dec 2016

One day while sitting in a chat room a young woman entered, and seeing me typed, "Ohio!" Seeing the misspelling I decided to have fun with her. So I replied "Michigan!". She seemed confused.

No No... You are Japanese right?

I said Yes. Japanese-American.

She said, Well than..."Ohio!"

To which I replied "Michigan!"

She asked me, "Why are you saying that??"

I said because You are saying "Ohio" and I am replying with "Michigan!"

She says, well Michigan is not Japanese. I think it comes from Some Native American language. And I replied that, Yes.. I knew that.

So why are you saying "Michigan!" ...and I said again, Because you typed "Ohio!" ... and She seemed a bit irritated.. saying,

No, No, No...I am speaking Japanese!

I replied, no actually right now you are speaking English.

She said, I am trying to say "Good Morning" in Japanese!

I typed in response, " ahhh you mean おはよう!". And she said... Yes, I think So, I can't read Japanese, and I can't type that!

Well, I said, So you actually wanted to say "Ohayou".... that means good morning... or more formally "Ohayou gozaimasu! おはよう ございます"

Yeah she said... so why did you say "Michigan" and I said, well I heard there was a rivalry between Ohio and Michigan, and thought it was appropriate to keep it going...

"oh," she said ... "I guess I better learn how to spell good morning!" and I told her, you Just did it and its correct.

"Huh?"

Never mind I said, .... おはよう ございます! good morning!

Both are on small peninsulae which project southward into the ocean -- I remember reading there is only one short section of CA coastline which can ever see a sunrise over the ocean -- it runs mostly east to west, with some short sections that actually have an eastern coastline.

I've seen photographers have their camera set up on a tripod, ready to be simply clicked while they sit patiently for an hour to be sure to catch the moment they want. Then they use the entire roll in the determination to get that one perfect shot.
