I'm not trying to minimize your argument of racism here because Trump voters are certainly that.

But my own particular issue is the sexism. Trump voters gave the Republican party the go ahead to take women's rights away and NOT A DAMN ONE OF THEM thought that issue was important enough for them to vote against Trump. Roe v. Wade will very likely be overturned. Sexual harassment will be tolerated again. Insurance will be allowed to cost more for women again, and women will still be working for lower wages than men.

And every person who voted for Trump voted FOR this to happen because none of them thought it was important enough NOT to vote for Trump.

I want Democrats to, for once, stand their ground. I want them to draw a line in the sand and hold that line. Not only will my rights as a woman be affected, but my very LIFE as a person nearing retirement age (ha! ha! like retirement will ever happen for me!) will be shattered by Trump's plans. I am not going to play nice with anyone who didn't think I (and everyone else) was important enough not to be informed about what they were voting for.

193. My problem with Trump voters is that they voted emotionally, not logically.

No rational person could add up all the crap spewing from Trump and conclude that his election could in any way, shape, or form be good for the future of the Republic.

So there has to be deeper reasons. I've entertained the following.....

1) Racism. Willing to accept any hardship as long as THOSE people suffer worse. Plenty of historical precedent on that one.

2) Lack of critical thinking. Laziness and lack of rigor in standardized-test driven schools -- it's too hard for them to sum up all of the things Trump said and actually figure out he contradicted himself more often than he contradicted Hillary when it came to policy and that his promises had miles and miles of weasel words in them.

3) General Ignorance/Brainwashing. Too many of these snowflakes seem to operate by rules of thumb coming from 40+ years of right wing media brainwashing: "If a liberal wants it it must be bad and if it pisses a liberal off it must be good."

4) Spite. Michael Moore's middle finger reason is also pretty good. "If I'm going down, I'm taking you with me."

But out of all of them, the only one I've seen that REALLY gets a Trump voter worked up and red faced is if they think you're calling them a racist. I am a Democrat because I grep up in the upper midwest. You don't grow up in a harsh environment where 40 below is common without recognizing the important role of community. That unforgiving environment punishes every equally and doesn't care about minor details like who looks like what -- to beat it we all have a responsibility to dedicate our particular talents for the greater good whenever and wherever we can. My father was blue collar to the core and as a child I learned first hand the difference between good and bad bosses came down to how much they cared about their employees' well being. I came from a lower class family -- I completely owe my place in life to a superior subsidized public education through university and as a child of the cold war I took a hard technical education because I thought that was where I could do the most good. As a result, I firmly believe in the value of investing in people (giving them developmental, medical and economic stability) and in letting them discover who they are without moralistic criticism as long as no-one else is being hurt. I want a strong community and as such I reject the social Darwinism of the Republican party.

A better approach would be to plant the seeds of doubt into their minds. Make them question their beliefs and think about stuff from other perspectives outside of their bubble. People tend to open up their minds when individuals in their circle of friends or family is affected. It hits home for them and is not some abstract idea that affects other people somewhere else.

One example could be the coal miners who were mad at Dems for losing their jobs, but are also losing their health insurance and their elderly parents losing their Medicare. Or women who have been grabbed by local men next door who are not minorities or immigrants.

I did speak to an elderly couple in McDonalds about Trump though. The woman was wearing the dumbass "Make America Great Again" hat and my Boyfriend made a comment to me about it. She overheard and told us that she has been afraid of war with Russia since she was young.
