Stop pleading for understanding and kindness for Trump Voters

Stop.

Yes they are - even your sweet little old Auntie - racist and hateful.

All of them

I mean - All. Of. Them. - even the theoretical "kind and loving" Trump voters I keep hearing about here on DU:
Acted to support a racist campaign.
Voted for a racist agenda.
Accepted a lying sexually predatory con man, willingly.

They acted to harm my children harm my friends and put the country at risk.

If your kindly little old lady Aunt poured cyanide in my children's water, I wouldn't give a shit if she had been told it was cool aid.

So, I am not moved by the argument that we shouldn't judge as racist people who have done an obviously racist act.

I'm not trying to minimize your argument of racism here because Trump voters are certainly that.

But my own particular issue is the sexism. Trump voters gave the Republican party the go ahead to take women's rights away and NOT A DAMN ONE OF THEM thought that issue was important enough for them to vote against Trump. Roe v. Wade will very likely be overturned. Sexual harassment will be tolerated again. Insurance will be allowed to cost more for women again, and women will still be working for lower wages than men.

And every person who voted for Trump voted FOR this to happen because none of them thought it was important enough NOT to vote for Trump.

I want Democrats to, for once, stand their ground. I want them to draw a line in the sand and hold that line. Not only will my rights as a woman be affected, but my very LIFE as a person nearing retirement age (ha! ha! like retirement will ever happen for me!) will be shattered by Trump's plans. I am not going to play nice with anyone who didn't think I (and everyone else) was important enough not to be informed about what they were voting for.

I was not trying to downplay his sexism, or for that matter his religious bigotry and his dismissive belittling of the disabled.

He is completely, irredeemably vile.

The focus on racism mainly came about because of several OPs that I can sum up as "Don't call my sweet Aunt Millie a RACIST just because she supports RACISM"

If people can't at long last see what is obviously right in front of our face, because calling racists racist hurts their feelings, then fuck 'em

What the Democrats should be doing is working better to engage and bring in the nearly half of the electorate who didn't vote. If we focus on bringing them to the table, then maybe the fraction of trump voters who are salvageable will hear that message, but we shouldn't waste time and subvert our policies trying to target them in particular.

Looking the other way, making excuses - how will that change anybody's behavior? It just enables people to continue indulging their bigotry and/or dereliction of civic duty to make an informed vote.

In my opinion, being cravenly uninformed is a worse excuse than being a bigot. If you are going to vote for a sociopath, own it! Have the courage of your convictions. But don't tell me that such and so is really a sweet old lady who just didn't know who she was voting for. Shame on her. She should have stayed home if she couldn't be bothered to get informed. Trump voters were very eager to believe everything negative about Hillary, yet they would justify (and are still justifying) all that Trump did regardless of how vulgar, etc.

I think there are some Trump supporters who have been quite surprised at the backlash they are getting for having voted for Trump, and they are trying to mount a defense, feeble as that may be.

I know many conversations that I personally had with Trump supporters right after the election involved Trump voters saying "oh, nothing will change". Well, Trump's entire premise was on changing everything. If they supported him, why wouldn't they have believed him? Nothing will change, my ass. He's going after anything that will grow HIS empire.

Some voted for a racist because they thought there was something in it for them. That actually makes them worse.

lunasun put it more eloquently than I ever could:

Plenty of Auntie Millies in Germany voted for Hitler and plenty enjoyed his economic turn around

Enough of them thought it was worth what was being done to Jews to get 0% unemployment and infrastructure built . Aunt Millies didn't complain as times got better for them under Hitler and Jews got taken out of sight . Aunt Millies shopped in stores with signs that read -No Jews allowed and didn't think twice
Hitler played on fears of no hope when the economy was bad and looked for scapegoats . Jews lost German citizenship by 1935. That alone by Jews not being able to work allowed unemployment to come down in Germany for some of Aunt Millies relatives
By 1940 Aunt Millies in Italy, Hungary, Romania, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Vichy France, and Croatia had all saw anti-Jewish legislation come about

We fought against Nazi Germany's and these allies military
US WWII soldiers died fighting fascism . What a disgrace to see the start here so embraced by some or aunt Millies who say who cares about Russia ? Putin is stronger than Obama and they like that authority for the US
If you are in doubt learn more about his appointments like Bannon or how Flynn agrees with trump about a Muslim registry
Am I calling all Aunt Millies Nazis? No but we have to give the stern message that many of us think that they are well on thier way to creating the same situation here in the US by putting trump and the alt right in power . Not just a yes ,I feel you pain nod.

If they are tough talking Aunt Millies who want to nuke everything and piss on the disabled and poor cuz they got thiers and fuck everyone else because rush and fox told them well then it is even worse to encourage these types saying you understand it just all the koolaid talking. No it's been accepted and voted on by aunt Millie !

Everyone. The difference is that those that admit it and work to overcome it. The other side will claim to love all people of color while destroying their lives with indifference and a hundred other ways. "All lives matter" for instance.

Those that voted for Trump don't believe they are racist. I have never voted for a Republicon in my life and I know as a white woman I have racist views sometimes. I am fallible and human and I work at. I do not lie and I don't advocate to hurt others. That is the difference. The denial is that "I'm not racist". If you vote for a race baiter you are a racist. It's just lying to yourself and others. IT's why it's so fucking deceitful.

193. My problem with Trump voters is that they voted emotionally, not logically.
Fri Dec 30, 2016, 10:01 PM
Dec 2016

No rational person could add up all the crap spewing from Trump and conclude that his election could in any way, shape, or form be good for the future of the Republic.

So there has to be deeper reasons. I've entertained the following.....

1) Racism. Willing to accept any hardship as long as THOSE people suffer worse. Plenty of historical precedent on that one.

2) Lack of critical thinking. Laziness and lack of rigor in standardized-test driven schools -- it's too hard for them to sum up all of the things Trump said and actually figure out he contradicted himself more often than he contradicted Hillary when it came to policy and that his promises had miles and miles of weasel words in them.

3) General Ignorance/Brainwashing. Too many of these snowflakes seem to operate by rules of thumb coming from 40+ years of right wing media brainwashing: "If a liberal wants it it must be bad and if it pisses a liberal off it must be good."

4) Spite. Michael Moore's middle finger reason is also pretty good. "If I'm going down, I'm taking you with me."

But out of all of them, the only one I've seen that REALLY gets a Trump voter worked up and red faced is if they think you're calling them a racist. Being a white guy who can pass for a redneck when I want to, I can see why. People always get mad when you get uncomfortably close to a truth they're trying to keep hidden.

they are going to need our votes. After the Republicans shred all of the safety nets and the promised jobs don't materialize. The idiocy of what they did will be more evident than it already is.

This isn't a game and voting for what is being planned isn't a "win" by any measure. It's unimaginable that they would vote for that again just to spite us. That they would be willing to hurt themselves simply to spite us would only aid in showing just how hateful, or stupid, they actually are.

To get these people to vote Democratic the candidate would have to be "bullshit diplomatic" in order to get their vote. But at what point do you say no more bending over backwards for the kind of people who are willing to throw tantrums like a 5 year old in a toy store?

The Democratic party has been sliding towards Regan Republicanism for years in an effort to court these voters. Hillary openly appealed to them during this election cycle. Many of them publicly said "oh Trump is a bad man I'll hold my nose and vote for her". They then promptly turned around stabbed her right in her back.

Why do we have to beg and plead, and grovel with them to vote for their own well being?

That shit ain't gonna happen because the Chinese pay their people in a month what you expect to make in a day. Oh yea they also do it in a mines that have no safety standards and tend to randomly collapse on their asses. But that can't happen here because of OSHA and regulations you say?.

Nope, nope that guy over there wants to shove all those pesky, and costly, regulations aside so that you too can die in a mining collapse. Many of these people are not engaged like we are. Many don't pay attention and/or are not critical. Many see/hear only what is delivered via their news of choice.

I do agree that many can fall into that bucket, but personally, I don't believe it is ALL of them.

I think Trump and Republicans won big because we were hacked, not because half the country is racist and sexist.

It was wrong for sure, an evil act. Trump voters made a terrible error in judgement. And in a just and fair world they would all suffer some retribution for the damage they have inflicted. And if Trump does what we expect of him, many of them will (along with innocents who don't deserve it).

But was it an act of irredeemable evil? Like cold blooded murder? Or was it a redeemable act, on par with a lesser crime? If it was irredeemable, we're sunk as a country. The best we can hope for is peaceful partition into two or more nations. I agree that Trump voters all gave aid and comfort to racists, but I argue that many are redeemable as people. And at some point we will have to offer forgiveness if we are going to move forward as one united nation.

Most are and always have been Republicans anyway. The issue I'm seeing here is the writing off of ALL of rural Americans as racists because their states went red this election. It's a broad-brush stereotyping I'm not used to seeing in liberals. Except for the reddest of the red, those areas also have Democrats and Independents, sometimes pretty closely rivaling the Republican numbers, and if we write them off we're doomed unless we can get rid of the Electoral College.

There is no way they did not see the foundation of racism that Trump built his campaign on. They are perfectly fine with it, couldn't wait to vote for him. That makes you a racist. They heard the grab them by the p* comment and said that is the man for me. That makes you a misogynist. He associated with and said he was open to name people to the SC that would vote against equal marriage rights and cheered. That makes you a homophobe.

If they are put off by it, tough fucking shit. Very real people will die because of the policies Trump has openly said he will enact. Those coal miners that voted for Trump, even after he said he will repeal the ACA, are now worried they will lose healthcare coverage, Tough fucking shit. That is perfect example how their hatred of the other outweighed their own interests. They willingly voted for a man that will make many of the people I care about fear for their life. They made their intentions very clear with their vote. They were too busy yelling "jail her" "kill her" "trump that B*" I have no sympathy for them.

I prefer to have sympathy for the victims of a crime, not the perpetrator. I will not forget.

If they are liberal then they didn't vote for trump.

I don't give a flying shit where someone lives if they voted for trump then they indeed said A-OK to his racism, misogyny, homophobia. He was very open about it. They can't feign innocence, not with me. You might want to give them a pass for ruining people's lives, but I won't. I will call them out on it every chance I get.

Face it, many Trump voters sayit was about the economy and he is a great businessman. Yet they knew he did not pay people who did jobs for him, they had to sue. He bankrupted a casino, not one, but FOUR. Just how in the hell can you bankrupt a casino?

Taj Mahal 1991; Trump Castle 1992; Trump Plaza and Casino 1992; Trump Hotel and Casino resorts 2004. Plus a few other bankruptcies. Not to mention his failed businesses and his University scam? This was well known. He admitted he does not pay taxes and refused to release his tax returns. So their "economy" reasoning doesn't hold water. They just use that to justify their vote for a man that they know is a horrid person.

I refuse to accept racism, misogyny and homophobia as being something to reward and accept as normal.

It doesn't surprise me at all that Trump would bother most African Americans and other minorities given this country's history.

Many people are very self-centered, though. They pick issues important to them and ignore others.

Look at many so-called Christians in this country who believe that God favors people by making them wealthy! It's the OPPOSITE of what Jesus taught (assuming he ever existed), but those Bible passages get swept under the rug!

I've seen Trump voters interviewed who said (paraphrasing), "I don't like it, but I don't think he really means that stuff. That's just his way to get more attention." If they're being truthful, it shows they placed very low value on racism/bigotry concerns. Does that make them deplorable? I think so, and I've never apologized for them! I just want to be careful because there were also many racists who voted for Clinton!

http://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-election-race-idUSKCN0ZE2SW

For example, 32 percent of Trump supporters placed whites closer to the top level of "intelligence" than they did blacks, compared with 22 percent of Clinton supporters who did the same.

About 40 percent of Trump supporters placed whites higher on the "hardworking" scale than blacks, while 25 percent of Clinton supporters did the same. And 44 percent of Trump supporters placed whites as more "well mannered" than blacks, compared with 30 percent of Clinton supporters.

I'm just not sure that calling people racist is effective. Lots of people need better educated and exposed to other people, though. The media's tendency to cover black protestors or hard-core racists in a sensational matter hasn't helped either! Corporations must love the "white vs. black" angle since it keeps more eyes off them!

I suggest that everyone just assume the worst in others and try harder to get sensible laws passed. Some words on a piece of paper deemed "the law" is more effective than trying to change the beliefs of some people. Look at Nazi Germany! The real key to Hitler's power was a law that made it illegal to speak against him or the Nazis!

A vote for Trump was a vote against everything that I consider unique and valuable in this country. If I had voted for Trump it would have been a deliberate act of treason. I don't know why I should hold Trump voters to a different standard of conduct. The only reason I can see to hold actual Trump voters to a different standard is condescension.

Yes, I hate what they have done to this once great country. Ignorance is no excuse. The right to vote is also a responsibility. Failure to be informed on the issues is a dereliction of the duty of citizenship. The fact that there are and have been Democrats who are or were racist doesn't validate anyone's vote for Trump.

Dec 2016

I know what you are feeling and I think I can help you out. When Discussionist was up I went there because frankly it is more fun to skewer conservative cretins than waste time prolonging some bitter "I'm a more pure Democrat than you are" argument with someone on DU I am likely 90% in agreement with anyway.

You've only been here a couple days, but given you disdain for Superdelagates, your support for Bernie, and your contention that Democrats need to act complete doormats that Trump can stomp all over I think your counterculture position will ultimately leave you unhappy and bitter...so here are my suggestions. Check them out and you might find you like them better.

First. JackpineRadicals might be a place you will enjoy more. Frankly I liked quite a few of the long time DU types that ended up over there, they have some thoughtful folks, but I can't stand going there given the professional Kremlin troll they give a large platform to. One thing you can say about pre-Trump DI conservatives, they couldn't stand Putin's internet trolls any more than I could and so JPR's guest star was unceremoniously kicked from DI. That was, of course, before rigid unthinking party-first conservative doctrine turned Putin from the "leader of the evil empire" to "a leader to be admired" (TM). But still there are a lot of good folks on JPR and I think you might be happier with their purity of soul.

Second. You might even want to go the other way. Conservative Cave's denizens would certainly not go harshly on you either based on your posting history here. Better keep it solely to criticizing your fellow Dems though, because let's face it conservatives will ban your ass in 20 seconds if you dare disagree with them.

Anyway, welcome to DU. Who knows, maybe it will agree with you in the long term!

A lot of what you said just isn't true. I didn't and don't support Bernie, don't have disdain for SDs, and never suggested anyone act like a doormat. The counterculture comment made me laugh actually. Thanks for that.

I guess I am in the minority in that I prefer to actually hear what a person has to say rather than throw them in a category and ignore them based on a vote. That thought seems like you are saying Hillary voters are superior people to Trump voters. Thinking like that is dangerously close to the definition of being a racist, which of course is one thing people use as their reason to alienate half of the country.

This country doesn't get any better by sheltering yourself from the other side.

Look, you're not happy here. Your short posting history paints a picture that you are simply offended by being around Democrats.

While it says you have five posts, I can only find four online. That's strange, but I'll go through them one at a time.

1) Your very first post ended on a guess that discussion here is stifled, while piling on a hot-button issue.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/10028408831#post6

2) Your second post is all about your disgust about "level of hatred" you see among Democrats and leveling accusations of being un-American.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/10028411453#post109

3) After hurling your little bomb, you double down with a confirmation bias post instead of actually engaging the poster. I can see why, by the way, given your premise was effectively shredded there wasn't much for you to come back with.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/10028411453#post173

4) And now you are seriously trying to formulate some sophomoric equivalance about Democrats being racists?

http://www.democraticunderground.com/10028411453#post206

Now, to me that spells out something unsavory but perhaps we're getting off on the wrong foot.

So let's do a proper DU introduction.

1) What aspects of the Democratic party appeal to you (Why ARE you a Democrat)?

2) Are you happy about President Pussygrabber's victory?

3) Be honest: how does this picture make you feel? (BIG HINT: Did not come from Democrats)

I am a Democrat because I grep up in the upper midwest. You don't grow up in a harsh environment where 40 below is common without recognizing the important role of community. That unforgiving environment punishes every equally and doesn't care about minor details like who looks like what -- to beat it we all have a responsibility to dedicate our particular talents for the greater good whenever and wherever we can. My father was blue collar to the core and as a child I learned first hand the difference between good and bad bosses came down to how much they cared about their employees' well being. I came from a lower class family -- I completely owe my place in life to a superior subsidized public education through university and as a child of the cold war I took a hard technical education because I thought that was where I could do the most good. As a result, I firmly believe in the value of investing in people (giving them developmental, medical and economic stability) and in letting them discover who they are without moralistic criticism as long as no-one else is being hurt. I want a strong community and as such I reject the social Darwinism of the Republican party.

I am a Democrat because I came of age in the hills of Appalachia watching the mines and mills die while 3 generations of union members were demonized and blamed for it.

I am a Democrat because I watched as Reagan proved that funneling cash to his cronies was easier if he could put a black face on welfare.

I am a Democrat because I believe that education - even for poor folks - is a vital function of a healthy society

I am a Democrat because I believe that women are fully human, and deserve autonomy in their life and health choices.

I am a Democrat because I believe that all citizens deserve equal treatment under law.

And also because that the GOP, a party that used to comfortably include Jack Kemp now embraces a festering cheeto colored chancre

By 1940 Aunt Millies in Italy, Hungary, Romania, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Vichy France, and Croatia had all saw anti-Jewish legislation come about

I am positive that the number of racists in this country is easily triple the number who voted for Trump.

Not all of them voted - and just being a Democrat is no proof of purity - NOT AT ALL.

This is a country founded on white supremacy, and that has warped the social fabric since day 1.

Everyone (IMHO) is somewhere on a spectrum of racist thought and attitude, and I think the distribution is a classic bell curve - ranging from "Not racist at all" all the way over to "I'm ready to lynch someone"

Most people are in the middle section labeled "Pretty Fucking Racist"

I would like to think better of my fellow Americans that they can't be as bad as you describe.

A better approach would be to plant the seeds of doubt into their minds. Make them question their beliefs and think about stuff from other perspectives outside of their bubble. People tend to open up their minds when individuals in their circle of friends or family is affected. It hits home for them and is not some abstract idea that affects other people somewhere else.

One example could be the coal miners who were mad at Dems for losing their jobs, but are also losing their health insurance and their elderly parents losing their Medicare. Or women who have been grabbed by local men next door who are not minorities or immigrants.

But are they all hopeless? All irredeemable? Can some of them be turned around? I get the venting and frustrations and it's justified, even if not productive.

We have two years to figure out a way to get some influence back and maybe only reaching out to people who are like minded on everything isn't going to get us there.

p.s. we could break up the country into two -- them and us-- but then they would get all the great national parks and forests.

A Trump voter failed basic civics class. They decided somehow that this unqualified, corrupt insecure little twit should run our nation into the ground because they were frustrated. That is a failure of citizenship.

Nope. Just like participation trophies are supposedly bad for devaluating winning it's obvious that not calling out and shaming stupid people only sets us up for more stupidity.

Maybe two people in my age group (20s) one of them is my co worker who claims to be one of the 11,000 people who voted for Harrambe. The other voted for Gary Johnson.

I did speak to an elderly couple in McDonalds about Trump though. The woman was wearing the dumbass "Make America Great Again" hat and my Boyfriend made a comment to me about it. She overheard and told us that she has been afraid of war with Russia since she was young.

At the time we just thought she was an idiot. The assumption being that HRC would win and everything would be fine. Of course now I feel like the idiot for telling them Donald Trump didn't have a chance.

I think about her sometimes. Everyone has the right to an opinion, but I'm not anymore upset at that ignorant old lady than I am at my friends who just didn't bother to vote or wrote in some dumb shit.

Yes, they are what they voted for. And those who enabled the election of the biggest POS of all are every bit as bad, IMO.

There is NO justification for either in this most important of elections.

You won't see ME either. And I'm appalled that there are people on DU expecting Dems to roll over and worry about what the hell Trump supporters did, didn't do, knew, or didn't know, or what the hell they Trump supporters think of the rest of us.

Every time someone on DU defends Trump supporters, they are marginalizing the very real suffering that those of us who DID NOT vote for the dumbass will have to endure. I don't appreciate that myself.

175. "Whitelash"
Fri Dec 30, 2016, 04:02 PM

This is what 'whitelash' looks like

(I don't know why CNN has brought this back from November 19 but the link is on their front page. May have already been posted here at one time. Probably should have its own thread. Rings true AFAIC.)

Whitelash is a new word coined by CNN commentator Van Jones to describe, in part, why he felt Americans elected Donald Trump as president. But the term describes an old reality: Dramatic racial progress in America is inevitably followed by a white backlash, or "whitelash." Reconstruction in the 19th century was followed by a century of Jim Crow. The civil rights movement of the 1950s and '60s was followed by President Ronald Reagan and the rise of the religious right.

Maybe it was an attempt to be tolerant and open but I thought it was futile. I usually try to see where someone else is coming from even if I disagree but this plea was going nowhere. They are too rigid and stuck in their ways. They don't want to be understood. They see the world the way they see it and that's it. They stay in their narrow box and comfort zone. It's wasted time and energy.

And as much as I don't want to feel this way, I look at my many clients in flyover country differently now. I live and work in San Francisco, and now in our office we play a game "who's the trumpster" when dealing with flyover clients. Deplorable or not, I just don't care anymore to be nice with middle America.

I'm from too far north to be a redneck, so we refer to ourselves as white trash.

Rural whites have been ignored and abandoned.

An assload of em deserve it tho.

The issue is that there's good folks out here in the corn. Our party... DEMOCRATS SHOULD LEAD. UNAFRAID OF THE RACISTS.

If we had a better, stronger example of what this party stands for - more of us rural white people would show up.

Fuck racists. Fuck dems who assume rural means racist

Look for a way to convince our opponent to like us instead of fighting back harder.

The Democratic party stands for things our opponents hate. They are not going to stop fighting us until we are exactly like them.

Fuck this surrendering in stages strategy.

It made very little sense when we were running against a sane Republican party - it is completely unacceptable now

They nominated and then elected a criminally unfit misogynist. Racist. Liar. And they did it because it was better in their hearts and minds than losing to a Democrat

Any Democrat is beyond the pale to folks that would vote that way.
.
Looking for ways to appease them should be anathema to any Democrat. Fighting them is the duty of all of us.

He waxed poetic about a lot of things. One was the Russians. Go back to your military knowledge . . . What did THEY fund in West Germany from 1973 to 1976?

See - Trump was too busy making sure black people didn't live in his daddy's mcmansions in the sky to care about the threats to the lives of Americans of all races stationed in West Germany with their families by his buddy boy's predecessors.

If these voters are on board with Trump and his comrade - fuck them.
