I've been doing temp work through an agency, can't find regular work. Haven't had anything in two weeks.
So the deal was 4 hours work, starting at 4 am Saturday in downtown Seattle. 35 miles one way across the 520 toll bridge. Plus, I would have to drive to Kirkland, about 25 miles one way, on Friday for an "orientation." So, that's about 120 miles of driving for 4 hours work, at $9.50 an hour.
I get about 17 miles/gallon, and at around $4 per, that would mean I would spend $20-25 to earn about $38 before deductions.
That's what corporate America wants us to do.
I declined the offer. And I'll still tell unemployment that I didn't refuse any work.
Fuck 'em.

(13,588 posts)This was about 1989 and I had a job. I was real specific about what I was looking for. Something better than what I was doing. They called me to do something called soil count at a linen service. C'mon! I was a warehouse guy, night boss. I wanted something similar with better hours.
Had I not been working at all I probably would have took that in hopes of getting in there and getting a shot at a drivers job for those guys. Evidently they didn't listen real well though. I ended up getting days where I was at before too long anyway.
