Carl Paladino was ousted Thursday by the Buffalo, New York School Board following a racist tirade on Michelle Obama. But during the hearing, School Board President Barbara Seals Nevergold didnt hold back in her criticism of the Donald Trump campaign co-chair.
Words matter, Mr. Paladino, she said during the meeting, which Paladino did not attend. Our president, the Commander in Chief of this nation for the last eight years, Mrs. Obama, our First Lady, and Mrs. Valerie Jarrett, special presidential council are all African-Americans. Among other things, they are accomplished, intelligent, beautiful people and thats not just my opinion.
But under Paladino, Nevergold said that they were reduced to criminals, frauds or gorillas.
The impact on children of color, especially African-American children is incalculable, she continued. How do we encourage them to use their God-given talents to soar, to reach for the stars, when a sitting board member responsible for their education demonstrates such contempt of their role models?

(129,084 posts)That's the point of why they do it and we have been hearing similar reports about such coming from elected and appointed officials nationwide on almost a daily basis. It has certainly been the standard clown routine on RW talk radio for at least the past 30 years.

But also the white children, especially those coming from a more right wing family, that now will grow up for at least four of their years knowing that to to grow up to be President you can be a bully, a racist, a female abuser, a homophobe. Instead of being ostracized, you will be rewarded by your fellow countrypeople to attain the highest office in the land. That such a man, if you can call him that, is President and as such is a person you look up to and emulate.

(129,084 posts)and you see it manifested in his older sons.
It almost plays out like the old "Hollywood Cowboy" stereotype, with the brash but ruthless gun-toting brute who bursts into the saloon itchin' to take someone on in order to "prove" his bravado, resulting in people avoiding him (while he believes their doing that is out of fear and respect rather than loathing). But that type eventually gets so blinded by their own manufactured persona, that they never came up with a plan B for when they are finally run out of town once the townspeople have had enough.

Heartbreaking and infuriating. The girl is very sweet and top in her class. This is in a predominantly white rural working class community. Maybe they feel it's not fair a "foreigner" is better at school than them...

(6,927 posts)stated " I am not a racist". How limited is their self-awareness? How cold and uncaring are they? How do they interpret their words as not racist? How stupid do they think we are? How do they dress themselves and show up on time for meetings and appointments? Do they pray to God with those nasty words?
I could go on.

(34,074 posts)The resolution read aloud in a raucous room that exploded in applause when Mr. Paladinos critics spoke, and in jeers at a board member who called for forgiveness and an apology passed, 6 to 2. Mr. Paladino was not present.

He has repeatedly said he will not resign, so there is no particular reason to expect him to tender his resignation because he was asked to. From earlier articles, there is not a clear legal mechanism to remove him.

If nothing else think of it as "protective custody".

(9,353 posts)There must be money to be had by being on the board. Why fight it otherwise?

(603 posts)Paladino collects rental fees from the City of Buffalo on buildings he owns that are being used as charter schools. He functions on the school board as its biggest advocate of draining public school resources for the furtherance of charters, in which he has a stake. This obvious conflict of interest was not enough to get him removed, it was his ugly racism that finally did it. He wants to be a handmaiden to Betsy DeVos, an agent in the destruction of public education because he profits personally. The board cannot let this vampire leech have any more power. He needs to be vanquished for good.

(985 posts)It's adding insult to injury to bring in Dylan Roof after saying that a black woman should be living with a gorilla. But, people saying that they "forgave" Roof didn't mean that they thought he shouldn't face consequences from his actions. Paladino isn't fit to serve on a school board, but we do hope that his soul doesn't burn in hell. Now, go away.
