Open Letter to Trump (not snark) About Your Choice of Bodyguards

These thoughts in response to a Politico article:

Dear President Elect Trump;

I am sure that your friends Putin and Mogilevich have told you not to trust the Secret Service. They have probably told you that all great men hire their own bodyguards----muscle that is absolutely loyal to them and to no one else. Like the Germanic guards that Roman Caesars used. People outside politics as usual and therefore with no stake in the game allowing them to focus all of their attention on protecting the man who signs their paycheck.

Do not listen to these "friends." The folks who have set you up as the Bandit King----the "outlaw" who will right injustices and make the country "great" again---know that a Bandit King is most effective as a martyr whose work will be carried on by his VP who will exploit the passing of a "great man" to push through a radical agenda that America would never tolerate under normal circumstances.

Yes, I know you think that you have a personal bond with some of these guys. But there is no bond stronger than that of the Secret Service with the POTUS. They will do literally anything to protect the president. Their entire sense of identity revolves around that one thing. Trust the Secret Service. Do not try to interfere with their work.

Anyone who advises you to replace the Secret Service with private bodyguards is not your friend. Not if by "friend" you mean someone who wants to keep you and your family happy and safe. If, on the other hand, you love the thought of being a martyr for a political cause, then go right ahead and put yourself in harm's way. But remember. If the worst happens because you made an error in judgment, people will not call you a martyr. They will call you dumb.

Why would I, who despises everything you stand for, try to give you advice to keep you safe? Because you are a human being. And also, for selfish reasons, because as much I fear you, I fear President Pence pushing through a reactionary political agenda in your name even more. Think LBJ enacting the Voting Rights Act and Medicare but in reverse. I am sure the right wing thinks about that every single day. And if you ever seem in danger of being impeached, they will have to ask themselves "Who do we want Pence to be? Gerald Ford or LBJ?"
