And lets him move out of the Ecuadorian embassy in London to America where he can roam freely?
He can even take Megyn Kelly's 9:00 P.M. slot at FOX NEWS.

(99,718 posts)But couldn't Britain just give Ecuador an ultimatum; extradite Assange to Sweden or close your embassy. It's not as if Ecuador is some international player.

(7,287 posts)But it would be a fairly serious diplomatic incident. The authorities seem to have been happier to treat it like a self-imposed siege and wait for either the Ecuadorians or Assange to crack.
I don't think they could order Ecuador to extradite him - I don't have time to check right now, but Ecuador may not have an extradition agreement with Sweden anyway, and it would be a slightly more complicated process than their authorities just doing it on a whim - it would have to go though their own legal system.
Any demands would more likely be that they surrender him to British custody to face the music here for jumping bail and complete the course of the earlier UK extradition court case.

(99,718 posts)My ultimatum would be give us Assange or close your embassy and take him back to Quito with you.
Why is it in Ecuador's interest to thumb its nose at the UK, Sweden, and the USA?

Embarrassing as he can be, they probably figure Assange in his current predicament isn't worth stirring up the trouble. Plus the legal system demands he answer at law for skipping bail - they couldn't just allow him free passage.

I am just trotting out a parade of horribles that show Ecuador is in the wrong here.

(7,287 posts)Their regime, like a number in South America, has been caught up in the wave of thumbing their noses at the major state players in the west. There's been enough dabbling by our own clandestine services in their internal affairs over the years, after all.

(12,161 posts)and unrecognizable the government of Ecuador. Even then the grounds of the embassy may still be Ecuadorian territory under international law. Ecuador may not be a big international player but they are a sovereign nation that has allies in Latin America and elsewhere.
What you are suggesting would be a major shit storm. I don't think PM Teresa May or the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Boris Johnson would want to start. International affairs are never simple. This is why we are in for a rough ride with the short fingered, foul mouthed simpleton soon to take charge of the nation.

Imagine what Assange would have on Trump: evidence of treason.
