Here is an opinion written by Simon Malloy from Media Matters which, imo, captures Politico and it's tactics then and now, the piece was written in 2007 and, ironically, I found it on Politico, lol:

Is Politico a GOP Shill?

snip

"In short, this is a publication by and for political junkies. But, as it turns out, The Politico also has a loyal fan base in the Bush administration and the Republican National Committee, which typically show the "mainstream media" the utmost contempt. White House senior adviser Karl Rove speculated that the all-politics publication would prompt regional papers to dismantle their Washington bureaus. At a Feb. 14 news conference, President Bush invited Mike Allen, The Politico's chief political writer, to explain his new outfit to "the American people."

And then there is the "slow bleed" saga. As we at Media Matters for America documented in a Feb. 14 article, John Bresnahan, The Politico's congressional bureau chief, used the loaded phrase "slow bleed" to characterize the Democrats' strategy in dealing with the administration on Iraq. That same day, the Republican National Committee released a letter citing Bresnahan's article in falsely claiming that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Rep. John P. Murtha (D-Pa.) call the Democrats' strategy "their 'slow-bleed' plan." Bresnahan issued a clarification on Feb. 16 which made clear that "slow bleed" was indeed The Politico's "characterization," and that it "was not a term used by any Democrats or the anti-war groups supporting their efforts." But the damage had already been done -- conservative bloggers were shouting "slow bleed" from the rooftops, and congressional Republicans were dropping it into their speeches."

they are part of the whole koolaid madness that is Washington DC. They make up their own reality and scoff at those who vary from the narrative.

If it hasn't been pointed out, the funding behind Politico comes from the Allibrition family that has strong rushpublican roots. They usually just regergitate the latest beltway gossip...preened from the drinkie drinkie parties and playing telephone. They gladly circuilate the talking points and then the verbal masturbation that follows. It draws eyeballs to their website and keeps the party invites and liquid lunches coming...
