Frank Bruni: Rumors of Hillary Clinton's Comeback

Rumors of Hillary Clinton’s Comeback
Frank Bruni
JAN. 6, 2017

Hillary Clinton as New York City mayor?

Imagine the fun:

City building inspectors start to show up daily at Trump Tower, where they find a wobbly beam here, a missing smoke detector there, outdated wiring all over the place. City health inspectors fan out through Trump’s hotels, writing citations for clogged drains in the kitchens and expired milk in the minibars.

The potholes near his properties go unfilled. Those neighborhoods are the last to be plowed. There’s a problem with the flow of water to his Bronx golf course, whose greens are suddenly brown. And the Russian Consulate keeps experiencing power failures. It’s the darnedest thing. Clinton vows to look into it, just as soon as she returns from the Hamptons.

She makes Alec Baldwin her cultural affairs commissioner, Alicia Machado the head of the city’s office of food policy. She invites the Rockettes to perform at every official city event. Without any hand-wringing, all of them accept.

And she’s the belle of the international ball. When foreign dignitaries cycle through the United Nations, they make sure to drop by City Hall, especially because she was once the country’s secretary of state. She winds up meeting with some of them more often than Trump does. He handles this as any grown-up in a position of extraordinary responsibility would, with crack-of-dawn tweets about what a lumpy loser Angela Merkel is and where he places her on a scale of 1 to Melania.

“Sad!” he fumes, but Clinton couldn’t be happier. His hometown is her fief. She’s the boss of him whenever he’s in the Big Apple, and he’s in the Big Apple a whole lot.

I’m fantasizing, yes, but with a glimmer of encouragement. On Wednesday Newsmax, a conservative outlet, reported that Democrats who couldn’t abide the city’s current mayor, Bill de Blasio, were courting Clinton to run against him in a Democratic primary this year and deny him a second term. The Times weighed in on Thursday, noting that speculation about a Clinton candidacy had been “bubbling up for weeks” and was intensifying.

And nobody is "born for" anything; you make your own destiny. Since she will never be president she can still serve in an important way - if she chooses to do so - and being mayor of the biggest and most important city in the country is a pretty good way to do it. However, I'd rather not see a fight between her and DeBlasio.

I like DeBlasio and as far as I know, Hillary also likes him. I can't imagine her trying to push him out. Now if he decided to run for something else, it might be different.

the sexting killed his chances and people moved to de blasio .

i don't think hillary will or should run because i think she would be more influential outside of those public office. but if she did she will probably win.

But only after a bruising fight that would put the differences between the left and centrists on full display all over again all for a fairly inconsequential office.

So, some writer for the NYT cruises NewsMax - no one's idea of a credible news source - finds what he thinks is a juicy tidbit and decides to base a column on it. There are no sources named in the original Newsmax piece, and the NYT writer doesn't bother checking with any sources for himself, he just passes on a rumor from a conservative site - a rumor that may be totally made up.

But see how quickly people rise to the bait - no questions asked. Looks to me like we're woefully unprepared for surviving the coming era of fake news and non-truth.

So now they have two houses on that street. Perhaps the intentions are for Chelsea and family to move next door and groom her for Nita Lowey's seat in Congress (she's turning 80 this year).

If she wants to run for something, how about something in Chappaqua?

Chappaqua is about 50 minutes away by train. It is not a boro and while I'm not sure of the residency requirements, I don't think that plays well with voters.

During her initial run for Senate (my first election) she was considered a carpetbagger who chose NY because the open seat was safe D.

after every election - they did it to Gore, then Kerry, and it worked to get Dems to start pointing fingers at each other and to disrupt any unity from the election year. Stop falling for it. Shame on Frank Bruni for allowing himself to fall for a fvcking TACTIC.
