Stay Safe and Dry, Bay Area.

Heavy rain drenched Northern California early Sunday, triggering flood warnings and causing deep water and road closures across the Bay Area, as the first in an expected sequence of storms hammered the state.

Parts of the region already had seen 2 inches of rain or more from the first storm by 6 a.m. Sunday, according to unofficial tallies by the National Weather Service. High winds, with gusts of up to 60 mph, were uprooting trees across the region.

Northbound Highway 101 was closed near Windsor, north of Santa Rosa, at about 7:30 a.m. after several vehicles became stranded in deep water, according to the California Highway Patrol. There was no notice on when the freeway would reopen.

Two Novato mobile home parks, with a total of about 120 residences, were evacuated around 7:30 a.m., as the combined high tide and surge or rain threatened to flood the area, according to county authorities.

By mid-morning Sunday, rainfall totals were somewhat lower than had been forecast, though more wet weather was expected through the rest of the day. Marin County officials deactivated their emergency operations center a little after 9 a.m. Sunday.

Flood warnings that had been issued overnight remained on the Napa River near St. Helena and the Russian River in Guerneville in the North Bay, on the Guadalupe River in San Jose, and the San Lorenzo River in Santa Cruz. The rivers were expected to crest later Sunday as the rain was forecast to intensify.
