Trump wasn't asked much about the economy during his press conference on Wednesday, but when he was, the president-elect managed a rather colossal error.
Trump said that there "are 96 million wanting a job and they can't get (one). You know that story. The real number. That's the real number."
It is unfortunately very far from the real number. There are in fact 96 million Americans age 16 and older who are not in the labor force. Of this, just 5.4 million, or 91 million fewer than the number cited by Trump, say they want a job. The rest are retired, sick, disabled, running their households or going to school. (This number is 256,000 fewer than last year and 1.7 million fewer than the all-time high for the series in 2013.)
Defining the size of the jobs problem in America is critical for the administration and the Federal Reserve to get economic and monetary policy right. If there is indeed a large cadre of Americans who want work but can't get it, it makes sense to have strong fiscal and monetary stimulus. If that number is shrinking, as the data suggest, it means much less policy is needed and too much could ignite inflation.

(6,931 posts)When he takes office in eight days with an national unemployment rate of 4.7%. Him and the Cons are just priming the pump for when that number skyrockets under another failed trickle down.

Ronnie Raygun used to do this all the time -- lie and be excused for "error."

(4,229 posts)That doesn't want a job.
My wife and I are retired, we were both government workers.
If there was any chance of a raise that would have kicked up our retirement benefits, we would have stayed in our jobs, but all we saw was budget cuts and no pay raises. Co workers leaving and caseloads going up. My wife was pretty much on call 24 hours a day.
Also know a lot of people in their 50's who quit due to their children needing somebody to take care of their children.
We are so much happier retired and out of the work force. We are way poorer and come close to living check to check but we were both so stressed toward the end of our careers.
The Republicans would like us all to HAVE to work till we are 70. Unless we are some CEO or stock market gambler that can cash in at 40, or some trust fund baby who never did an honest days work in their lives. They would actually I think, like to go back to the time when there were laws that would put you in JAIL for not having a job. Most people forget a lot of areas had laws like that before labor law.
But one thing people forget is back when "America Was Great", when only 1 person could support a household and 1 parent could stay home and cook good meals and take care of the kids we had about the same percentage staying home as now.
Now jobs take every drop of your blood. If the GOP wants more people to work, then they damn well better pass legislation that makes people have better pay and working conditions. Otherwise those that are smart and are able to pay off their debts and jump off the treadmill will.

(6,931 posts)Knows that in eight days he OWNS the National unemployment rate? New numbers will be out around Feb 6th or so. So when Cheeto is Pres he's going to stick to that 96 million figure?? That statement sounds like something that he would have been making a YEAR ago,not when he's eight days from the WH.
Dumber than I thought................
