Biloxi, MS shows how classy they are...

I bet they still consider King to be a "commie."

YIKES: Biloxi, MS Sends Out Tweet Renaming Martin Luther King Day 'Great Americans Day'

I shouldn't be surprised that a state that has the confederate flag actually IN it's state flag is racist. I mean, they are literally showing us their "patriotic" American views, right? And yet I was still shocked by this tweet that was sent out by the City of Biloxi's office twitter account this afternoon:

Non-emergency municipal offices in Biloxi will be closed on Monday in observance of Great Americans Day. — City of Biloxi (@CityofBiloxi) January 13, 2017

Yes, they renamed Martin Luther King Day "Great Americans Day."

That has been a Virginia state holiday since 1904. When MLK Day was approved they lumped them together into Lee-Jackson-King Day. Hold on there jus a moment (old Virginia accent) one uh them was not BORN here in the Commonwealth ya see.

So under then Gov. Jim Gilmore they created a 4 day weekend for state employees. Yeah that made a lot of sense.

BTW - "Stonewall" Jackson's birthplace is now part of West Virginia.

You know, the white flag of surrender, the only Confederate flag that matters.

In the not so distant past, a number of states gave their employees the option of taking off for either MLK Day or Robert E. Lee's birthday in January. They eventually eliminated observing Jefferson Davis' birthday and combined it with Lee's birthday to create Confederate Heroes Day. I usually took that day off instead of MLK Day because other employees wanted to observe MLK Day because they were minorities, because their children were off from school or because they wanted a three-day weekend. It didn't mean that I didn't recognize or realize the contributions that Dr. King made--it was simply a matter that state agencies have maintain at least a skeleton staff while the Legislature is in session.

Considering some of the nastier names that I've heard associated with MLK Day, I think that the city was trying to strike a balance and make it more inclusive for everyone by calling it Great Americans Day since they are aware that some people don't respect Dr. King. However, no matter what name is associated with the holiday there are going to be some people that are offended. I hope that people observe the day respectfully, but considering that this isn't a widespread movement it shouldn't rank up to the level of whether to say Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays.
