Calling all tech wizards.

Is anyone else having the problem that some images in posts are not showing up when using the Chrome browser? (You might be and not know it.)

I actually replied a couple of times saying an OP didn't make sense, but it turns out that was because the gist of it was presented in an image which did not display for me.

The most confusing part is that it doesn't happen in all posts.

Here's an example of an OP where the image doesn't show up in Chrome but does in Firefox:

And here's one where the images show up in both browsers. (Using my own post because the only other one I could find at the moment had a giant, frightening closeup of K. Conway!)

Does anyone know or have the ability to help me figure out what's causing the problem in Chrome? I'm usually relatively tech savvy, but this one's got me stumped.

Clearing the cache is the first thing I'd do. Chrome on my multiple devices is loading all of the images.

It could be that your ISP is having difficulty with certain web addresses, or it could be that an extension or a security program (antivirus, etc.) is blocking https://pbs.twimg.com/* and other sites.

If you cleared your cache, I'd try restarting before checking out any other possibilities. The suggestion downthread to see if the problem occurs with incognito browsing is a good one.

I have also already tried chrome://restart. I am trying to avoid resetting, but it may come to that.

If you do and your Crome profile exists on another computer, shut down that computer until you get done uninstalled and reinstalling Cromebooks. Don't reset yet.

First thing I'd try though is download the free version of CCleaner. Run it and then its registry cleaner tool a few times.

after googling the problem. The photo does show up in incognito mode and so I tried disabling extensions. I just can't seem to find the one that's the problem. I was hoping maybe someone else had the problem and had success IDing the culprit.

I guess I'll need to go back and try each extension again. Must have missed one.

from that Twitter image hosting site? (The source for the image that you can't see using Chrome.)

Maybe do a Google search for "https://pbs.twimg.com/media/" and see if Chrome allows you to see the images?

but I'm pretty confident that all of the images not showing up are hosted at pbs.twimg.com/media. The thing I don't get is that if I copy the image url from Firefox and paste it into Chrome, it displays. It just doesn't display in the post on DU.

I think I'll take stonepounder's suggestion to post to the 'Computers and Internet' group and see if that helps.

host to show up everywhere but within posts on DU.

You know what else I figured out? If I click to reply to a post where the image is not showing up, it does show up in the version on that reply page. (Though I don't think it did when this first started happening, because I think I would have noticed that when I replied to say the post didn't make sense.)

I am intrigued to know what is causing this. I can usually figure out computer problems (with loads of googling), and I just hate it when I can't!

Maybe that will provide some clues too?

On my browser, I right click on the page and choose "Inspect Element" from the resultant window. The new data window takes up some space, but it's easy to close again.

but to no avail. Though I have to admit, I'm not always exactly sure what I'm looking for when I inspect the elements. Occasionally something obvious stands out to me, but nothing this time.

By the way, on the other Windows computer I use, logged into the same Chrome account, the problem does not occur!

that made me try all kinds of things trying to fix it -- e.g., downloading various types of anti-malware software and the like. Nothing seemed to work, then poof! It stopped happening, apparently without any fixes by me.

I also had strange experiences with Firefox in which the keyboard stopped working. It only happened while using Firefox, although the keyboard problem persisted even after Firefox was closed. I rebooted to get the keyboard to function again, but that's obviously inconvenient.

I looked up the issue in various computer forum sites and found someone with the same problem. He "solved" it by clicking a special Windows button on the keyboard. I tried it and it worked! No idea about the "root cause" of it, though! I just use that trick whenever it happens, like it's a "part of my life" now.

I'd rather be slightly inconvenienced than tracked and data mined. But that's just me.

just occasionally on old sites, mostly non DU discussion board posts. Usually, clicking the box and asking to show the image doesn't even work as the link is broken.

Seeing that box would have been preferable, though, as I'd at least have known there was an image there. It would have been far less confusing!

I use Adblock and Adblock plus, but don't do much customizing. Not sure if you're read the whole thread, but I've tried a number of fixes, including disabling both adblockers to see what happens and nothing's made a difference.

The bit where the missing images do show up if I reply to a message really perplexes me!

I'm probably missing something obvious, but so far, obvious as it may be, I'm definitely missing it.
