Chinese paper warns Boeing, U.S. agriculture in crosshairs of Trump trade war

An influential Chinese state-run newspaper on Thursday again warned that U.S. aircraft manufacturer Boeing Co (BA.N) and U.S. agricultural imports could be targets for retaliation in any trade war ushered in by U.S. President-elect Donald Trump.

Trump, who is sworn into office on Friday, has criticized China's trade practices and threatened to impose punitive tariffs on Chinese imports.

Billionaire investor Wilbur Ross, Trump's choice for commerce secretary, voiced sharp criticism of China's trade practices on Wednesday, telling senators he would seek new ways of combating them.

In an editorial, the Global Times said that as the United States has the stronger economy, China may suffer more once a trade war starts, but China "will take the U.S. on to the end".

1. China loses heavily in any trade war with America

by virtue of the staggering trade deficit with China. China would fall into a deep depression in any serious trade war with America. The worst America would suffer is higher interest rates, which we need anyways, and a short recession. The long term upside is many new jobs being created in manufacturing here which will add to long term economic growth. Especially where we have not had it for decades now.

The US would instantly fall into recession as well, who are you kidding? The big difference: we have a far weaker stomach for massive economic downturns than the Chinese.

if it has to do with restoring America's manufacturing base...which used to be a democratic principle...until the neo-liberals took the party leadership over. Now mega-super-sized global corporations are cool as long as they are slinging money the DNC's way, and the workers.....not so much. Whatever. You won't getting too many new converts with those positions. Just Sayin.

Give yourself a hand Bernie Bro.

BTW for every manufacturing job Trump *might* create by starting a trade war with China, he'll kill several more at the ports due to decreased activity. Or do you not realize how how dependent they are on imports to survive?

If Trump wants a triumphant return to the Rust Belt, he should consider banning robots. They'vd killed far more jobs than international trade.

this country's manufacturing based has been decimated across industry lines. America no longer makes anything in electronics, clothing, furniture, kitchenware, housing supplies. You name it. No, this country is OUT of most manufacturing industries and have lost may skills associated with it. If it was just Robots, the industry would still be here....but of course...it is not. And this country has become a laggard in Robitics itself. Bad trade policy was and is the leading destroyer of prosperity in this country.

Most Americans get this. Sadly, most in the leadership of the democratic party, and here, don't get it. Too bad for you.

the second largest manufacturing nation in the world, yes? And that the industry actually expanded by 2.9% between 2003-2013, yes?

It's a myth that we don't make anything anymore, but we're part of a competitive global market and thus our share of the pie is smaller. Onr things for sure, if we start picking fights with China, Mexico, Germany, etc, we'll become worldwide pariahs, and for what? To appease nationalists back home who can't deal with the fact that the world doesn't shut off when middle America goes to sleep?

13. The modern history of US trade wars is fighting to a stalemate at enormous cost

The inherent problem with any US trade action is that while the US is a very large exporter it isn't an indispensable one. An Airbus A320 is better than an Boeing 737, Canadian wheat is just as good as American wheat. Retaliation against the US is really easy, to gut the US in any trade war you really just need to target about fifty companies.

was setting up a negotiating point with China. He can now go to China and say, well, here's what I'll do for you If you commit to ending currency manipulation, I'll forget about the import tax. Norm thinks that's the way the Con sets up potential win by setting up a false problem. I don't know if his idea is true, but we'll see.
