Reich: Trump becoming POTUS "sickening event" in US history, "a tragedy for America and the world"

Posted by Robert Reich on Facebook, minutes ago:

Tomorrow, Donald Trump becomes president. This is a sickening event in the history of the United States, a tragedy for America and the world, and a victory for hatefulness, racism, misogyny, and authoritarianism.

Tomorrow we say farewell to the first African-American President —a man of decency, integrity, and dignity — and turn the national reigns over to a thin-skinned, vindictive, impulsive, sociopath. Trump is a conman and bully who is ignorant about democracy and disdainful of its basic institutions. He lies constantly. He has cheated his customers, investors, and contractors. His countless tweets and stream-of-consciousness statements at his rallies reveal a nasty, greedy, mendacious, bigoted human being, with a level of egotism and narcissism rare even among politicians and celebrities.

Trump fueled his campaign with the sense of dispossession and anxiety found among millions of voters—most of them white – many of whom voted for him because they thought he would carry their resentments and fury to the nation’s capital, and make our political economic system work for them instead of the privileged few. Some say Trump rose on racism. But racism has been with us since the founding of the nation. Trump rose on downward mobility and economic fears, which allowed him to exploit racism and as well as fears of foreigners and Mexican immigrants, Islamophobia, and the rest of his hateful arsenal.

Trump is the ultimate price our political establishment pays for doing almost nothing to improve the plight of the bottom 60 percent of Americans for over thirty years.

As David Remnick has written, the most hopeful way to look at this grievous event is that it and its consequences in coming years “will be a test of the strength, or the fragility, of American institutions. It will be a test of our seriousness and resolve.”

Every decent American – regardless of political party, or wealth, or race – must now commit herself or himself to combating Trump’s authoritarianism, calling out his lies, protecting the weak and vulnerable among us, keeping hope alive, and preserving what we can of what is best about America.

It is a tall order, but there is no choice.

What do you think?

We went from "hope and change" to "go fuck yourself". We went from one of the best VPs and most qualified cabinets of all time to a group of people who I wouldn't trust to run a Starbucks. We are in very dark times ahead.

of our beloved America.

Perhaps we were never meant to last.

I'm sad for the men and women who gave their lives over all of these years in the belief that it would always be the land of hope and dreams.

I'm sad for my children's children
who will never know it.

I'm sad that over half of the citizens of our beloved nation didn't care enough about it to show up and vote. The garden didn't get water, the flowers died, and the weeds took over.

😥

The Roman Empire fell, the sun finally set on the British Empire, and after a relatively short time on top that we assumed would last forever, our time is over too.

Which is fine, really. I think it's the Scandinavian countries' turn to be the most admired in the world.

however, I think he is going to directly attack any politician that does not agree with him and he will do it publicly and with calls to his minions to attack that lawmaker on social media, etc. He fully intends to put on a Mask of unity while pursing wildly divisive policies.

I will never again have any sense of allegiance to our government or our traditions.

When this happens it ends any sense that there are men of good character and conscience in charge of creating a pathway to a better future for all Americans.

These ass clowns are not even pretending to give a fuck about the welfare and security of the underclass.

To hell with hope and opportunity, the American dream is now a nightmare with only the very rich benefiting from the labors of over 200 million worker bees.

Billionaires running the country right into the abyss and becoming even more obscenely wealthy while doing it.

I am ready to get started now. Trump says his Cabinet will have the "Highest IQ of any Cabinet ever". Really?

The current United States Secretary of Energy, Ernest Moniz, received his PhD in theoretical physics from Stanford University in 1972. Moniz joined the faculty of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1973, serving as head of the Department of Physics from 1991 to 1995 and as director of the Bates Linear Accelerator Center. He co-chairs the MIT research council.

Trump's Secretary of Energy, Rick Perry, was a cheerleader at Texas A&M.

Anyone who is expecting any member of the Republican party to behave with basic human decency is deluding himself or herself.

They are making it very, very, very, very, very clear that they care not a whit for the future of their country or their world, but are in it to steal whatever they can from the future for their own short term gratification.

There's no two ways about it. Fascism is rising again in the world, and it couldn't happen at a worse time.
