Part of being a great president is showing off Americas military strength, according to President-elect Donald Trump.
The military may come marching down Pennsylvania Avenue, Trump told the Washington Post in an interview published Wednesday. That military may be flying over New York City and Washington, D.C., for parades. I mean, were going to be showing our military.
Trump spoke about his vision of military parades in vague terms, suggesting it was something he might oversee in the future. But according to several sources involved in his inaugural preparations, Trump has endeavored to ensure that his first day as commander-in-chief is marked by an unusual display of heavy military equipment.
During the preparation for Fridays transfer-of-power, a member of Trumps transition team floated the idea of including tanks and missile launchers in the inaugural parade, a source involved in inaugural planning told The Huffington Post. They were legit thinking Red Square/North Korea-style parade, the source said, referring to massive military parades in Moscow and Pyongyang, typically seen as an aggressive display of muscle-flexing.

(27,806 posts)I mean, I know there's everything wrong with it, it's unseemly, it's grandstanding, it's "in your face" to a degree that seems stratospheric even for DT, but on top of it all, it's got to cost a fortune just to put one of those things on the streets.
I would guess flyovers are expensive too.

(27,806 posts)I just wonder if he'd priced it out. It's got to be in the six figures at least.

(12,583 posts)That wouldn't be cheap at all. And there's no way you could write it off as "training."
He really wants to be the petty dictator of the world, doesn't he?
Russian bombers fly over Red Square during a parade.

(38,311 posts)The first plane flew in 1952, the plane entered service in 1956, and the last was built in 1993.
There's never been another plane like it.
It's also one of the noisiest planes ever built. The sound they make is unforgettable.

What a wonderful world this would be if all the world's engineers were working on peaceful projects.
Why do so many innovative projects have to start out as war machines?
The internet itself started out as a military project... a communication system that would automatically reconfigure itself if parts of it were destroyed. The old long distance phone system was somewhat hardened against nuclear attack, (that was one of the conditions of AT&T's near monopoly) but it was still very vulnerable to certain kinds of damage.

(3,212 posts)including JFK. And flyovers, I believe.
I don't see anything with some display of military like a flyover or military bands in a parade, but we don't need tanks, imo.

(50,557 posts)There's a couple National Guard armor battalions in NJ, but the only tanks he could count on getting are the active duty tracks at Fort Stewart, Georgia. Reality time: the only feasible way to move them that far is rail.

(63,221 posts)He's a failed business man who stole an election. He has no genuine respect for actual military people. My brother is over in the Middle East risking his life and I know Donald Trump doesn't give a shit about him and won't when and if he returns. He won't fight for his health care if he should come back wounded or traumatized. How fucking dare he consider himself a champion of the military. I so fucking HATE that guy.

(63,221 posts)I appreciate your concern. I am so worried about my brother. They give them uppers so they can fly all night long and he is a wreck. Even if he makes it ok, he is a physical mess. He barely sleeps. It is sick what they do to them. I am sick with worry, but thank you again for your well wishes!
