Flag went past, Trump and Pence saluted, Karen Pence put her hand over her heart, but Melania just stood there with her hands at her side. Odd.

(6,419 posts)I think each of us have a personal reaction based on how we were brought up. For me, I still take my hat off. I know guys that don't.
I don't think she has the "reflex" to react. I don't think she has the experience of patriotism from living in a house/home with him. I don't think she has gotten any help/training/support from the campaign. They treat her like he does - as an afterthought. To steal from Michael Stipe " A simple prop, to occupy my time" and today his story is "Another prop, will occupy my time"...
So I don't find her reaction at all odd. She's a fish out of water who is trapped. And in a weird way, I feel sorry for her. Think of the emotional abuse he heaps on everyone. Imagine if she tried to escape. No - unfortunately, she's a poster child for the trapped woman.
My personal commitment is that one place I want to keep my civility is vis-a-vis Her and the little kid. Neither one of them deserve this chit (or him).

(34,126 posts)I won't disrepect the feelings of Americans who worship the flag (by burning it or being actively disruptive when flag-based ceremonies are going on).
But I do avoid arriving in a timely manner or I temporarily leave stadiums when I know the National Anthem will be sung. I typically bow my head and keep my hands at my side, or clasped together in front of me when I am someplace that decides it needs to recite the pledge.
I don't personally believe loyalty loaths (formal or informal) are an appropriate measure of one's character.
