It could be that he believes what he thinks and says to be the literal truth. That his mental illness causes him to misperceive reality.
A congenital, compulsive liar, or a president who is mentally incapable of perceiving reality...
I don't know which prospect terrifies me more.

(5,920 posts)Pathological liars all frequently lie without any reason for doing so. They do not look at lying as a way to obtain goals and external benefits in the way that most people do. Most people will lie in order to get something that they want without believing their own lies. Pathological liars will lie consistently and continually in large fantastical ways that can make it obvious to others that they are lying. Yet the pathological liar will believe his own lies and recreate his own reality.

(6,087 posts)I'm telling you, when he makes up shit, it's because he really doesn't remember. Anybody's Uncle Harry would be diagnosed already, but Trump is surrounded by enablers and people leeching off his celebrity.

(4,751 posts)On thebasis of my experience with a narcissistic family member who developed dementia, I'm guessing he is in the early stages of dementia. While he tries to fight what he feels is coming, he is becoming more paranoid, trying to maintain control. He is losing what filters he had and suspects everyone. He will fight those who even imply he is misinterpreting reality.
I'm not a doctor, but my family calls me "Dr. July" because I've diagnosed so many of our ills. So, I'll throw it out there that he has an incipient fronto-temporal dementia. If so, he's got no more than two years of faking it left.
Obviously, it's not good for us if I'm even half right. If I'm wrong, he's a special kind of sociopath. I'd like to know what is really going on with him, but I'm not sure it even matters at this point. The Republicans in Congress seem perfectly happy to use him to ream us either way.

This is a man who, according to his first wife, kept a book of Hitler's speeches by his bedside.
HE LIES.

(25,292 posts)I'm thinking Spicer and Conway off the top of my head - but - what I can't fathom is why they go along with it and lie for him.
And who else goes along with lying for Trump? his family? his wife?
If Trump is a sick man - why aren't they truthful with him and get him help?

He's a lot like many of the family members (often parents or siblings) that i've seen people talk about online, who have morphed into huge conspiracy theory true believers.
I can't tell you how many stories i've read, about folks going to visit family members and found them to have gone from sanity to spitting poilitical fire.
Trumpy talks a lot like many of them, and says things totally different from remarks he made even a few years ago.
