. . .
Trump is not engaged in a war with the media, as he claimed on Saturday. He is engaged in a war with the truth. His long-running disinformation campaign was merely unsettling when he was on the campaign trail; its downright frightening to see it deployed from the West Wing.
The fact that no one really cares about the size of Trumps inaugural crowd is not a mitigating factor here. Just the opposite, in fact. A president who has just taken the oath of office, with hundreds of issues demanding his attention, and who remains fixated on minutia of this kind is a president who doesnt have his priorities in order.
The public is used to "alternative facts" from the Trump campaign. But Trump is no longer a candidate or the host of a reality-TV show. Hes the president of the United States. In that context, as the new leader of our nation, his question about whether we now live in Nazi Germany sounds remarkably, if unintentionally, on point.
