The best we could hope for are some abstentions.
In fact Americans should boycott companies who use their oil. Would you take a gift that you knew was stolen?
We would become a pariah state.

(14,040 posts)A bill introduced by Alabama Rep. Mike Rogers earlier this month calls on the US to "terminate" its membership in the United Nations and effectively sever all ties with the organization.
The bill, titled the American Sovereignty Restoration Act of 2017, was proposed on January 3. It is cosponsored by a handful of Republican lawmakers, including North Carolina Rep. Walter Jones, Arizona Rep. Andy Biggs, Missouri Rep. Jason Smith, Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie, Tennessee Rep. John Duncan Jr., and Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz.
Biggs said in a statement on Monday that he cosponsored the bill because he believes that "our sovereignty as a country is harmed by our membership in this body."

(16,423 posts)Well done with the Brexit. The UK is now trading-partner with and bordering to a huge power-bloc and will be influenced by its decisions... except they won't have a say in anything this power-bloc does.
Same if the US retreats from the UN. What if the UN-members agree on some decision that the US doesn't like? What about the UN Security-Council?
While the UN keeps on managing the rest of the world, the US will hiss and boo from the sidelines in a desperate bid to get some attention from the adults.

(29,199 posts)The most we could do is make off with a few tankers full.
Iraq has an estimated 140 BB of oil reserves. VLCC tankers carry (typically) 2 MB.
To steal it all would take 70,000 tanker trips and someplace to store it here (which we don't have).
The best we could do is leave it there, station something like 250,000 troops to protect the fields and pipelines from sabotage and hope we don't lose that many troops. 250K is probably on the light side.
So, while this sounds good to tRump's idiot base voter, it can't be done.
Not to mention that it is a war crime.

(28,256 posts)Like I've said a couple of times before in the last few days, we have no right to just waltz in and take another nation's natural resources, any more than we have the right to plunder another nation's state buildings and museums, seize their crops, or enslave their people. ExxonMobil CEO Rex Tillerson can hopefully explain this to the idiot in chief, telling him that the acquisition of another nation's oil and gas is accomplished by means of detailed production sharing contracts, allowing exploration rights to an energy company in return for tendering a portion of any production proceeds to that nation. None of this "take their oil" Barbary Pirate bullshit---not unless Trump is a lot more desperate to kick off WWlll a lot sooner than even his harshest critics have predicted.
What an absolute nightmare we find ourselves in. God deliver us from this stupid, evil man, and his knuckle-dragging followers.

And I agree that overall boycotts should be enacted but it will really hard for some, the kocktopus owns most toilet paper and household goods manufacturing as well as oil, that's why they are so dangerous... and they are holding at least one of those marionette strings. It's going to take the kind of personal sacrifice as hasn't been seen since WWII. I think one of the next moves is to foment civil war here so be on the lookout, they need to get rid of the smart folks and politically active folks (will be labeled terrorists)'
