Nearly 500,000 people marched in the streets of Washington and millions more across the country as part of the Womens March Saturday, to express solidarity with womens rights and signal opposition to President Donald Trump. Now some of the activists that participated are hoping it can be done again to pressure Trump to release his tax returns.
Trump became the first modern candidate to win the presidency without releasing his tax returns, despite decades of electoral tradition. On the campaign trail, Trump said he wanted to do so but was constrained from releasing the returns because he was being audited by the Internal Revenue Service. The IRS has said Trump can release his taxes regardless of his audit status.
A leaked 1995 return published by the New York Times in October indicated that Trump could have avoided paying federal taxes, using tax deductions, for nearly two decades.
Activists on social media suggested that after last weekends protests that marchers should reconvene on April 15, when taxes are typically due, to pressure the new president into finally releasing his returns. (Because April 15 falls this year on a Saturday, taxes are actually due April 18.) - McClatchy News DC

(25,305 posts)Need to focus on healthcare, women's rights, immigration, free speech, civil rights, environment, wages, etc. The tax return issue can be a fun side show. (No amount of protesting will get Trump to cough up returns) But it can be a fun side show with a lot of "Show us your tax returns" signs.
But the focus and main goal needs to be on restoring rights that we previously had, but have now lost.
Gotta have an attainable goal!

(24,259 posts)I truly don't think that it's a battle we have a chance of winning unless they're released by a hacker, anonymous IRS personnel or an insider. If those returns show what many of us suspect that they might than there's no way in hell Trump is going to willingly let the public see them and since he's looking like the current Republicans wet dream come true they're not going to really push either.
Although I care about what he's very likely hiding by not showing us his returns, IMO there are MUCH bigger issues that we really need address very quickly and get people motivated to fight against... and it's looking like some even before April 15th.
