that is indirectly responsible for much of what happened this election cycle, mostly the repeal of the Voting Rights Act, but also the Citizens United decision.

This is not, perhaps, quite what they meant to unleash, but they definitely put this in motion.

3. I have thought the same thing

Trump is much more malleable than Bush after having taken stage direction for years. And I don't think Bush was downright hateful. But, I the people Trump has surrounded himself with probably have uglier intentions than Bush or even Chenney ever thought about.
Aside from all of that, in contrast, it would seem Bush was articulate and humble.
