‘We’re not going to shut up’: CNN’s Christiane Amanpour slams Bannon and Trump’s ‘totalitarian regime’ tactics

BRAD REED
27 JAN 2017 AT 13:05 ET

Top Trump strategist Steve Bannon told the New York Times and other media outlets to shut up on Thursday, but CNN chief international correspondent Christiane Amanpour isn’t having any of it.

While appearing on Anderson Cooper’s show, Amanpour hit back at Bannon and said his attacks on the press were akin to something normally seen in “totalitarian regimes in the past which use this same kind of strategy.”

“If I was going to be funny, I’d say that he’s angling for an order of merit from president Sisi, Putin, Erdogan and all the others,” she said, via Media Matters. “That is how they treat their press. That is what they believe the press should be, a compliant state propaganda unit in the service of the president.”

She then noted that, unlike countries such as Egypt and Russia, the United States has a long history of a free press that is enshrined in our First Amendment. “It is not the tradition of the American press,” she said. “So of course we’re not going to shut up, and why should we?”

press freedoms. He just doesn't realize it yet but just because he or the Neo-Nazi scum Bannon say something doesn't mean it's going to happen. That only happens when you are the CEO. Plumps approval rating is at 36%.

that's certainly where we're headed
the news media already sees it has to bow down and kiss ass to get access
outstanding question is how long will the news audience tolerate a lack of access in the name of "honest" coverage of our current political "reality"

Well, this would be two CON "presidents" - two ILLEGITIMATE "presidents" who had to cheat to win - who seem to share the same view of the Constitution. Remember when dubya was quoted as saying "it's just a goddamn piece of paper"?

I guess we've regressed back at least that far, again.

Make it THREE--Nixon was SO legitimate that, even with one of the great electoral landslide in US history in his hands, he was forced to resign in disgrace less than two years later, after cheating to win, and trying to mess with the press.

Totalitarianism is in the GOP genome.

from our media. Many of them have a lot to answer for because of the unlimited free publicity they gave Dump during the Primaries and the GE. They need to realize they are under serious attack. If we are to have a free press/media, they must speak out, loudly and often.

and bring in a series of dumbass media whores into the oval office and let them sit behind the desk and film it with taxpayer money. They will show "episodes" of "Real People™" going through a "day in the life of the President" - all available for viewing on Whitehouse.gov.

That is how he rolls and Congress and the media will let him do it.

in fact, our very first amendment was for freedom of speech and press

Will they repeal the 1st amendment? They're wanting desperately to repeal the 15th and 19th amendments (voting for minorities and women)

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

I'm sure Pence would like to establish a state religion and they all want to prohibit the free exercise of certain other religions too.

Trump and his administration are downright un-American

by being complicit to, and most times happily promoting the 24/7 bullshit being spewed by what are now the GOP's Putin-loving apparatchiks.

I like Christiane Amanpour and she has certainly paid her dues, but it seems they must have assumed that after the primary and general, the newly-elected deplorables would suddenly revert to the usual conservative vs liberal catfights. They are now finding, far too late in the game, that this was a coup and they aided and abetted it. As they are now discovering - they have been summarily discarded by the very ones they helped... all due to their insistence on doing false equivalence reporting.

Her depth and breadth of knowledge of politics, trade and international relations is beyond impressive. It is a comfort to listen to her when she speaks because what she says is REAL. She's not a half whit worthless pundit. She made that Jefferey Lord look like an idiot last night. I mean, he is an idiot but he's usually conversing with bigger idiots so it's less noticeable.

Anyone else seeing the networks trotting out some journalistic juggernauts lately? Christiane is one, I've also seen Brokaw and Rather recently to name a few. I don't watch a lot of network tv but I'm wondering if they sense the unease among viewers and know their dumbass stable of pundits aren't cutting it?

Being a propaganda unit of the government is in the news media's blood. The press has been just that so many times.

CNN and MSNBC and ABC and all the others were propaganda units for trump before the election, why would now be any different?
Sadly, with very few exceptions, all we have is Trump's propaganda core in the news media.
