he Trump administration on Saturday defended the White House statement on Holocaust Remembrance Day released the previous day following criticism over it not mentioning Jews or anti-Semitism.
Trump spokeswoman Hope Hicks told CNN that "despite what the media reports, we are an incredibly inclusive group and we took into account all of those who suffered."
Hicks reportedly provided a link to a story that noted that while 6 million Jews were killed by Nazis, another 5 million non-Jewish people were killed under Adolf Hitler.
CNN said it asked whether the White House was suggesting Trump omitted a reference to Jews as Holocaust victims out of concern it would offend others targeted by Nazis.
Hicks responded, "it was our honor to issue a statement in remembrance of this important day."
The White House statement mentioned "innocent people" targeted by Nazis but didn't mention Jews or anti-Semitism, which CNN noted drew a contrast from past statements by former Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama.
The Anti-Defamation League's Jonathan Greenblatt called the omission "puzzling and troubling," noting that it was a departure from past GOP and Democratic presidents.

(1,306 posts)This is the standard, boilerplate, KKK/antisemitic way of addressing the Holocaust.
Don't give the Jews the dignity or validation of specifics regarding atrocities because
the Holocaust never really happened anyway. Pat Buchanan would be impressed.
To rationalize that this is a way to be fair to all parties who suffered -- by being vague
and non-specific -- is an insult and a farce. Bannon wrote that crap for Trumph -- he
can't use the word "Jew" in a sympathetic vain.

(14,971 posts)in his tweet about the Muslim ban on the same day, using 'gas' for 'has' was a mistake. It was intentional. Evil people. It has since been deleted.

(9,808 posts)It's soft denialism, that trivializes the intentional, systematic destruction. "Final Solution" was only the first clause -- the whole phrase was "The Final Solution to the Jewish Question."
Yes, others were killed. Yes, they deserve to be remembered. Yes, they are important. Yes, they were targeted as well. Their destruction was an adjunct to an organized, systematic, intentional mass destruction.
If you have an Audible account, in the app under CHANNELS, then under AUDIOBOOK CHANNELS, then DRAMATIC HISTORY -- Bloodlands by Timothy Snyder is currently free. It's the one volume history most useful for identifying and combatting denialism. (It's a HARD listen. Take breaks. Have something really light and fluffy for afterwards.)
And lest we forget -- a lot of Denialism comes from the Soviet propaganda used to absolve Stalin. The current generation of Russian leadership grew up with soft denialism as their primary history.

(82,849 posts)I guess Preibus was on with chucktodd this weekend, and when they weren't interrupting each other (and good on Chuck for actually standing his ground), Preibus actually mumbled something about "never forget" in reference to the Holocaust. Me? I would have slapped the taste right out of his mouth and screamed that that's precisely what President Trump's proclamation did.

(18,124 posts)"intentionally" left out the relevant reference to the reason for the Holocaust Memorial. But a nazi anti-semite would do something like that.
