Additionally, they don't do much to protect customers either. There are mountains of stories of Uber and Lyft drivers committing sexual assault on their customers. The reverse is also true."

11. Help me out here. After reading your post I searched in vain for

any evidence for your claim that Lyft founder Logan Green is a Libertarian. Other than attempting to modify local transportation ordinances that are specific to his business, I couldn't find anything even remotely suggestive of that.
Residents of minority communities can attest to unequal service from traditional cab companies. Perhaps that is something you have not experienced.

2. Uber's CEO is a Trump sycophant. Lyft is donating a million $ to the ACLU. Big difference IMO.

Also, it's my opinion that no worker should be REQUIRED to be in a union if they don't want to be. If the drivers are Independent Contractors then they are the boss. Unionized school teachers sometimes sexually assault children as well but people still send their kids to school.

I'm all for unions being available for those who WANT to join one...but oppose people being REQUIRED to join one. I've also worked as an Independent Contractor before...where you are basically the boss of your own business and Independent Contractors are NOT W2 employees so they don't get treated like an employee.

Two, yes, we know- the taxi status quo people don't like ANY competition and don't want any changes from the wonderful, crony and medallion based urban taxi system gravy train they've enjoyed, and the rest of us have been stuck with, for decades.

Fact is, though, that for the customers, that system sucks ass.

If it didn't, Lyft and Uber wouldn't be so wildly popular.

Taxi companies have had a long time to shape up their act, and all the customers have gotten in response is monumentally shitty- if existent at all- service.

So, no, the concept isn't going away.

1: Reliance on hailing means service can and often is discriminatory.

2: Not really practical outside urban/suburban areas

3: Often have their own form of surge pricing, except its applied arbitrarily across the board.

I use Lyft and Uber all the time as I travel quite a bit for work.

Taxi's are not some worker's paradise you are painting. Many are not unionized, Taxi service mostly sucks or is not existent in many places, and there are also stories of Taxi drivers and passengers having altercations too.

Also, some Uber/Lyft drivers post here on DU.

So, thanks for trying to make a liberal "litmus test", but NO.

12. Few things:

1. Most taxi drivers here in Denver are NOT unionized so that argument goes out the window.

2. It would cost my partner approx. $35 (taxifarefinder.com) to go from her job downtown to our apartment while on Lyft it's only $17 (Frequently less with the discount codes we're always getting).

3. A manager at the Big Lots I used to work at would take Uber and Lyft home from work because many taxi drivers refused to go into Montbello (an African American/Latino neighborhood in Denver) late at night.

4. If you like waiting over an hour for an overpriced ride in a smelly car with a driver that bitches non-stop about your destination being "too far out of his zone" then taxis are just the ticket for you.
