Two articles explain why Session's appt as AG is bad for Alabama, too ...
Basically, his replacement in the Senate agreed to a Faustian bargain.

And what do you do when you're staring down the barrel of impeachment and indictment because of your own lack of self control?
If you're Gov. Bentley you take a long hard look at yourself, examine your integrity and ethics and find - surprise, surprise - you have none.
You have nothing left to lose. So you don't care how it looks. You don't care about right or wrong. You do what you can to save your own lascivious hide.
You promote the attorney general, the guy who opened a special grand jury to determine whether you are indicted or not, to the job he always wanted: United States senator.

I want you to imagine the most absurdly easy variation of Monty Hall's "Let's Make a Deal," where our contestant today is none other than Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange.
This game is easy for two reasons. The first is that our doors are made of glass. There's no mystery what's on the other side.
Behind Door No. 1 is what's good for the people of Alabama -- in this case, a chance to clean up Montgomery and give our state more honest, trustworthy government.
Behind Door No. 2 is what's good for Strange -- a path to a higher office of his choosing, either Alabama governor or the United States Senate.
Behind Door No. 3 is a goat.

But instead, he picked the damn goat.
