BY REBECCA SAVRANSKY - 02/12/17 10:37 AM EST
Former Sen. Jim Webb (D-Va.) on Sunday said the Democratic Party has moved "very far to the left" over the past five or six years.
In an interview on NBC's "Meet The Press," Webb said the Democrats are looking at 2018 and they "don't have a message."
"When you can't have a Jefferson-Jackson dinner, which was a primary celebratory event of the Democratic Party for years, because Jefferson and Jackson were slaveholders," Webb, a candidate in the 2016 Democratic primary race, said.
"They were also great Americans in their day. Something different has happened to the Democratic Party."
Webb said the Democratic Party's message has "been shaped toward identity politics. And they've lost the key part of their base," he said.

(42,641 posts)The GOP is so far to the right that a center right Democratic Party, the current version, seems to him to be far left.

(1,383 posts)1. Way too early to make such a claim.
2. The base, you say? Hell - just wait until you get a load of the republican legislation coming down the pipeline.
3. Just go and be a republican Mr. Webb.

(6,535 posts)Everything (except, as I perceive it, the general will of the people...especially the younger generations) has moved so far to the right that many of, say, Richard Nixon's policies would be considered too liberal to even be entertained by the Democratic party today.
Personally, as far as all that's concerned I'd be more aligned with Socialism than even the more-to-the left current Democratic party tenets. I feel that it's almost taboo to even talk about truly socialist ideas--there's literally no place for it in U.S. politics, and centrism has ruled the day for quite some time as far as the Democratic party platform--which I suppose it has to at this point, just from the perspective of realism.
I hope we will get through this desperate attempt by the far-right fascists to hold on to their power in defiance of the will of the people; I think if we do, if this current bunch of cheating, usurping bastards don't pass legislation that further entrenches their illegitimate control over the electoral process, we have a chance to really make some progress in the future--the fascists' pigheaded idiocy and incompetence are on full display...if they don't kill us all or do something to change the rules/destroy the foundations of the democratic process entirely, demographic changes over the next few generations will make them irrelevant. They are not the majority! At all!
Maybe someday things will shift, but for now there isn't any relevant (or even especially noticeable) "very far to the left" voice in American politics. Even the most liberal of liberals seem pretty well in line with capitalist norms to me.

But over and over he's sort of carried water for racism.
In that way he's a bit like an un crazy Trump. Maybe a bit more of an economic populist than most dems but way too tone deaf on race issues.

The Democratic Party isn't moving to the far left; it's been desperately clinging to the middle and trying to avoid being dragged to the right by the likes of Jim Webb, whom I cordially invite to go fuck himself.

(59,503 posts)His 2004 oped was dishonest and disreputable and it was written when JK was our nominee. Yes, I know JK endored him in 2006 when he was the primary candidate most likely to win the seat. That simply shows how serious and good a man JK is. As to Webb's 30 years of hatred, it was dysfunctional.

(37,160 posts)You'd think Democrats had been running a ticket headed by Abbie Hoffman (campaign theme: "Steal this country" with Bobby Seale as his VP and Commander Cinque as his chief aide and advisor. And tweet-yelling at anyone who doesn't appreciate Paul Krassner's line of inspirational poetry.
Let's also remember that Republicans opposed all of the "great in ear day" achievements of the Democratic Party.

(10,893 posts)"identity politics", then what is the GOP doing as they routinely craft messages directed at CINOs (Christians in Name Only) against Muslims, gays, Jews, etc.? Why are they the ones who are suspiciously creating voter ID laws that are in mostly non-White areas?
The GOP loves "Democrats" like JW who look the other way when it comes to what they do, and are more content on blaming his supposed party.
