I am a life long Deaf. I have been around DU long enough to know that Trump and DeVos erasure of the disabled website is no surprise. Yes I'm angry about this and I realize that many DUers are, too. For this I thank you all. Now I want to share this BBC documentary on youtube. It's 43 minutes long so you are aware of the time commitment to watch.
From Youtube....The Deaf Holocaust: Deaf People and Nazi Germany is a part of the season of programmes commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Holocaust and the liberation of Auschwitz, Clive Mason visits the killing centre of Hadamar to investigate the development and impact of the Nazi policy of enforced sterilisation and the murder of deaf and disabled people, which took place in Germany between 1933 and 1945. Members of the German deaf community, who are still living with the legacy of this brutal Nazi policy, tell their moving stories in English narration & Sign language.

(6,017 posts)With a few exceptions they've described disabled & neural-atypical people as the new "welfare queens". It's part of their attack on welfare & any sort of government paid health care or assistance.
Their solution is that any services or assistance needed by people who can't be a good little worker bee should be provided by churches.

(1,214 posts)The rift between my mother and I over SCROTUS got wider because of this. She refuses to accept that her candidate and his people have an ableist point of view.
(I had a stroke as an infant and this resulted in "developmental delay," as well as third nerve palsy. Playing sports as a child was frequently very embarrassing, since I couldn't catch or throw worth a darn. I've grown out of some of that, and at 46, my visual and motor-reflex issues are minor. I've occasionally encountered people who think that the appearance of my eyes is an indication that I'm high, but most people ignore it or just don't see it.)

(4,253 posts)I watched this video with horror and sadness. I may have been killed in Nazi Germany.
I now believe many Republicans in power share the Nazi belief of a pure race. That is why they want no universal, affordable health care. Let the weak and sick die.
Also they want to eliminate public schools so that their propaganda is successful. They will dumb down America.
I hope the resistance grows.

(659 posts)I hold dearly the Deaf community and yes most do not realize why the Repugs want to get rid of ACA.
I'm very heartened by the many K&Rs from you. It makes me a bit happier. Here's to a great DU community!

(16,887 posts)....to always be a reminder to us all of what happens when a Nationalist movement with the military and "purification" happens and how quickly it can happen and why we must never forget.
And why each of us right now needs to protest to each and every situation that will be presenting itself under Trump - the attacks on Muslims, immigrants, LGBT, Minorities, handicapped, women....
We will be busy.....and never back down...
I recommend everyone watch this...reminds you of the importance to speak out. I cried when the deaf woman who was sterilized at 13 because she was deaf cried to her mom that she wanted a baby someday. How she always wanted to babysit and it broke her heart to not have children. To hear her brother when interviewed talked about how the betrayal of how the nazis knew who was deaf was from their teachers and priests. That he watched the pain of his sister that she couldn't have babies. That his mother punched the head of his school when the principal said he had to also be sterilized. That a boy in his class who was always happy and funny came back weeks later after being sterilized and never smiled again. That parents were promised their children would have care and then were sent off - told their kids died of "natural" causes (flu, appendicitis etc)
It's scary....and how it was organized. And then I think right now of the "Dreamers" who trusted by reporting themselves now have their names on a list. And ICE has the list. How many other "lists" are there? Profiles, categories?
Nothing happened overnight in Germany.... And Germans realized when it was too late to speak out.
We can't be silent.
