"We are at the moment when our lives must be placed on the line if our nation is to survive its own folly. Every man of humane convictions must decide on the protest that best suits his convictions, but we must all protest."
-Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., 1967

(5,401 posts)in the 102-year-old door of my Methodist church because we have banners that say "God's Love is of ALL."
Our senior minister refuses to remove it-- it is our badge of honor. The banners were torn down, but we keep putting them back.

(5,730 posts)My father told me once that MLK said, if a man (person) doesn't have something worth dying for, then he (she) doesn't have something worth living for either.
There are a lot of denominations, including Episcopalian, that make the world better. It is so important not to be judgmental...unless someone else is judgmental and intolerant of diversity. Still, we should "try" to help them. We will usually be rebuked and cursed, but if we can change the hearts of just a few ignorant bigots, it's worth it. Remember, the Great civil rights leader, Sen Robert Byrd, was once a member of the KKK.

(90,698 posts)Start with the Unitarian Universalists. Episcopal Church. Methodists. Reform Judaism. Just a start.
Various organizations include Tikkun, Sojourners, Faithful America, State of Belief -- and those are only the beginning.
I encountered some of these liberal-religious during my time with Planned Parenthood locally, others during the BushCheney era as people like Rev. Jim Wallis spoke out for social justice and genuine religious freedom.
In this country we have the misfortune to have the loudest and rudest voices be those of fundamentalist "Christians" with a narrow and ignorant worldview. Theirs is not the only pov, theirs is not the final word on the Gospel, and don't let them tell you it is.

(31,111 posts)in my area (I was raised Methodist.) In one case, I had been attending a while. One day the
class got into every dumbass right wing meme you could imagine. Bitching that phone menus had an
option for Spanish was the only one I can remember now, but there were others.
I never went back.
the other one, the FIRST TIME I went, the class got into all kind of right-wing BS, how at the local hospital most of the babies born were non-white, and other such stuff. I said excuse me, I have to go, and left.
I never went back there, either.
I'm tired of this shit, and they ain't getting any of my money.
There are some UU's in the area, and maybe some of the others might be OK.
If anyone wants to know which Methodist churches these were, PM me. They are both in upstate SC.

I've always felt somewhat into politics and action, but was lazy. For the first time in my life I feel like we are at a moral crossroads and really need to take action, otherwise we are complicit in terrible things.
