How to fight one Fast & Furious conspiracy theory with another. (Sorry, but this is war.)

It always amazes me when people try to reason with crackpot conspiracy theorists. I'm guilty of this myself! You try to reason with them by saying that there is no evidence to support their wingnut conspiracy theory, and they respond by claiming that the lack of evidence is proof of an even BIGGER conspiracy, because all of the witnesses have obviously been tampered with!

Okay, so you cannot fight insanity with reason. But it IS possible to at least shut insane conspiracy theorists up by showing them evidence of A DIFFERENT conspiracy.

When a nutcase claims that if the Obama Administration has nothing to hid they should just release all the documents Issa wants, you simply point out that if Issa has nothing to hide, why is he blocking Democrats from calling ATF Director Ken Melson to testify in public, under oath before the committee? what is it that Issa doesn't want to hear him SAY when questioned?

We all know the answer to this. Issa simply doesn't want Melson to get sworn in in front of his Committee and then have Cummings ask him "exactly what did Holder know about Fast and Furious" and then have Melson say "Absolutely nothing, because I didn't know anything about it either." Because that's the truth. That's what Melson already said in his private meeting with the Committee in July, and that's what Issa doesn't want him to repeat in public when asked. If he did, this contrived 'scandal' would be over in five minutes. But he doesn't want it to be over, he wants to drag it out as long as possible. The standard technique of blowing enough smoke out of your ass that the public is going to thing there MUST be a fire SOMEPLACE.

At this point, if you're dealing with a minor crackpot, they'll ask for proof that the Democrats really want Melson to appear before the committee, and here is Congressman Cummings' letter to Boehner, explaining it. If you follow the link, you'll see Cummings has actually REFERENCED the more than ten times he and other Democrats have asked to have Melson testify in public.

That will usually shut up a run of the mill conspiracy crackpot. It will become obvious that Issa doesn't want him to testify because he'll just say that Holder knew nothing, and then there is no reason for Issa to go on subpoenaing every single email ever sent inside the DOJ, as part of a fishing expedition to find some juicy gossip for the upcoming election. (Standard WhiteWater 2.0 tactic. Get a toe-hold in an inconsequential issue like a stupid realestate deal, and then keep subpoenaing documents and witnesses until you find evidence of a blowjob. In this case, they're just fishing from some emails between junior assistant staffers at ATF and NSA saying how stupid they think the gunshow loophole law is so they can say "AHAA! Evidence that the Obama Administration wants to take away our gunz!" And I'm glad Obama is too smart to fall for that.)

The SERIOUS conspiracy crackpots will shut up at that point because they think that if Melson (a Bush appointee) is allowed to testify in public he'll implicate BUSH and the Republicans in the diabolical plot to run guns to Mexico for the purpose of taking away everybody's guns in the United States.

Anyone listening to Florida's John Mica(R-Rep) had to feel like this guy is so inflated by his self-importance, it was hard not to get furious at his arrogance. Interesting. Of course the NRA has an interest, and there seems to be conflict.

Maybe, JUST maybe of course, all the deception isn't going over that well. Is the conflict with the good ole boys GOP and the Ayn Rand loving Teas becoming the Grand Canyon?
It is one house I sure love seeing divided.

Get out the popcorn TrollBuster9090, this could be worth watching take place.
Smoke and mirrors. Do you think the Emperor is realizing how naked the truth is?

Money may NOT rule.

secretly gave guns to Mexican drug gangs to cause gun chaos to cause outrage in America, and bring in tougher gun laws. That theory was so crazy that nobody outside the right wing noise machine would believe it. But now the Fortune story has exploded and drawn attention to how all these assault weapons are going to gangs LEGALLY, thanks to ridiculously loose gun laws, and it was the Republicans who actually HYPED THE STORY IN THE FIRST PLACE! If they hadn't made such a fuss over this, bringing it to the national stage, right now all it would be is a couple of ATF agents whining to the prosecutors about how bad the Arizona gun laws are, and nobody else would even know.

DAMN I love this kind of irony!

I'm hoping the Senate will now call their own hearing and call all these ATF agents to repeat to them what they said to FORTUNE.

One can hope eh?
