I am not associated with the manufacturer or with Amazon, but when I see cars being swept away by flood, I am thinking of this little item.
The hammer can break the glass and the knife can cut the seat belt.

Each of us carries one of these in our cars.
It is unfortunate that automatic locks do not allow occupants to open the doors.
For many years I have been having nightmares of Jessica Savitch who, with her beloved dog, died in her car after it plunged through a canal. The doors were locked and they were at the bottom of the canal.
Wherever you are, stay safe..

(20,584 posts)My sister gave all family one for Christmas years ago. I often wonder if I would remember to use it, it's been in the door pocket for so long.
Thanks for the good advice.

(8,445 posts)Last winter a big wind gust caught his work truck and flipped it upside down. He said it was very difficult to get out of his seat belt, so I thought he should have one of those things. I'm not sure if he put them in his vehicles, but I'll be sure to remind him.
Great Christmas gifts. Truly a gift of love.

(13,912 posts)Is an automatic center punch tool, not a regular center punch. About $4 at big box stores, hardware etc. Just put the centerpunch on the corner of the side window and push. That's the weakest point on the window. The glass shatters tout suite. The only problem is that it does not have the seat belt knife that most of the Life hammers have..
The Weather channel did a little blurb on how fast a car fills up with water and the time you have to escape..
(spoiler alert) it's about 60 seconds... Their plan is after initially hitting the water and the engine/electronics are still on, undo your seat belt whilst pushing down the window button as the car fills with water. Get out thru the open window asap.
You cant open the doors because of the water pressure keeps it shut so out the window you go...
The only problem I can see is if your too "portly" to get out thru the window.
YMMV.. keep safe.

(1,397 posts)I'm an EMT in a rural Virginia volunteer rescue squad. All we EMTs carry one of these, or, the Gerber rescue knife that does the same thing plus having a wrench to turn on oxygen regulators. All our firefighters carry similar tools.
The tools really are lifesavers.

(2,747 posts)A few years ago I had a kitchen fire - nothing major but it scared the crap out of me. That year I gave everyone in my family a kitchen fire extinguisher.
And it was just in time. A few weeks later my sister and BIL had a pizza and tossed the box into the fireplace. It burst into flames and out into the room. My sister called me and said, "You saved our house!"
So yeah, make sure you have a kitchen fire extinguisher too and replace it when it expires.

Funny, we had one in our first home. When we moved after two years we had to think what do do with it. Don't remember, this is not something that the movers pack or that you carry on a plane.
Since then we've moved several times and did not think about it. But you are absolutely right and will get to it.
One thing, though, we do not keep coffee makers, toaster ovens or other small appliances plugged when not in use. Only the large appliances. Many years ago a family member of a co-worker suffered severe burns when a toaster oven, not used, exploded.

(2,747 posts)But then, I never was so stupid as to turn on the wrong burner either - of course the one with the dish towel on it.
And then there was the time when I was trying to impress a date by lighting brandy in something I was cooking. The flame didn't die out because...wait for it...I was stirring with a wooden spoon.
