Source: TPM
Lemon was moderating a discussion of President Donald Trumps frequent trips away from the White House, and the costs to taxpayers they incur. Paris Dennard, a former staffer in the George W. Bush administration and now a political analyst and commentator, called the story fake news
The President is not breaking any laws, and hes not doing anything, Dennard said.
Lemon stopped him. Fake news is when you put out a story to intentionally deceive someone and you know that it is wrong. He added: This story that were doing right now is not to intentionally deceive anyone. We are simply talking about the cost to keep a President safe.

These people are programmed to spout uncontrollably without making any sense.
I think Kellyanne Conway conducts webinars on that technique.

(42,862 posts)It's just a big game of cross-talk and over-talk and shouting down in which the LOUDEST (not necessarily the smartest) ends up being the "winner" in the eyes of the unsophisticated audience.
I've totally given up on all US-based television news sources (except occasionally PBS NewsHour)
I enjoy watching BBC World News (on PBS) and SkyNews and ReutersTV (streaming Roku).
When watching US-based news, it's pretty amazing to realize how LITTLE coverage or importance is given to the rest of the events happening around the world.
When watching non-US news programmes ... the reporting is detailed and not "dumbed-down". It's as though the reporter (producers) are already expecting to be talking to an audience with an attention span longer than a three year old, and basic intelligence that exceeds a 12 year old.
It's also interesting to get an unfiltered view of what the rest of the world actually thinks of Trump and our nation in general. It's a bit refreshing to hear honest reporting and frank editorials that don't feel as though they must oblige the easily offended jingoists by carefully tempering their words to the point where they lose all meaning.
Or... instead of going on and on, I could have just said US tv/cable news SUCKS compared to what you can get outside the US.

Excerpt:
Patterson makes a strong case that modern journalism often fails to communicate complexity. The book, an offshoot of the Carnegie-Knight Initiative for the Future of Journalism Education, examines journalism that fails to provide meaningful context, sometimes by giving equal weight to fact and opinion, other times by substituting infotainment for real news, still other times by allowing anecdote to trump trend.
Hes neck-deep in the problems of modern journalism, with chapters titled The Information Problem, The Source Problem, The Knowledge Problem, The Education Problem, The Audience Problem and The Democracy Problem. The problems add up to stories throughout history that have been horribly wrong, from the start of the Spanish-American War (Spain probably didnt sink the U.S.S. Maine) to escalating crime in the early 90s (it didnt happen), from the prevalence of voter fraud (it isnt a problem) to those Iraqi weapons of mass destruction (they did not exist).
The answer to mass misinformation, Patterson says, is knowledge-based journalism. In the 1980s, this was called specialty reporting. Before the digital age disrupted this model, journalists at university-based training programs learned everything from nuclear power to brain science. It was a way to try to provide the context the Hutchins Commission called for in the 1950s, the meaning that Walter Lippmann wanted in the 1920s. Yes, journalism should have more knowledge. The question, then and now, is how?

(959 posts)just keep talking, never pause for even a second. Talk over, around and through anyone else. That Milos jerk on Bill Maher last night, same thing. Bill told him several times to shut up, because he absolutely refused to let anyone, even the Repub jerk Kingston, speak at all. We need more of this type of action from media.

(7,530 posts)The description made it sound like Lemon stormed off, but he explained that the story they were discussing was not "fake news", the respondent said it again, and he cut him off and ended the segment.
We can call this "Conway's Law". If you're participating in a segment you think is fake, you deserve to be shut down.
