I hated all the slurs they called Obama and them saying he was not their president.

Trump is my president which is why I'm so pissed and why I'm holding his feet to the fire.

By calling him names we piss off the other side for no reason and they don't listen. Piss them off by pointing out Trump's lies and his incompetence, not but insulting his name.

I have no illusions about converting them. We can't and we won't. And I don't give a shit about hurting their feelings. I do care that they hate me so much they will never listen to me again and that they stay in "fight to the death" mode forever.

I couldn't care less. I bet if a NAZI spent five minutes with me he or she would hate me too. The only thing I want to do is protect myself, the ones i love, and the vulnerable from them.

but people dwell in the gutter for a reason -- sometimes that crap works.

i think the best solution is the game theoretical suggestion of "tit for tat with forgiveness".

in other words, if they dump on you, dump back on them in proportion, but then revert to the high ground.

hopefully, eventually everyone learns that the gutter doesn't pay in the long run.

but as long as we keep avoiding the gutter, they'll continue to take advantage of our good nature.

I used to work on ships. The work environment has the peculiar force of bringing out any weaknesses in peoples' personalities.

At one point I was on a ship with 2 other guys and the three of us had been friends for some 15 years. But we were of different ranks so there was still a hierarchy. My one friend (the boss) became more insufferable and irritating as time went on and the other friend and I spent a lot of time complaining to each other about it. One day my second friend said "Hey, I gotta go take a... (using our friend name instead).

It was at that moment I realized that things had gone too far and that I was in danger of losing two old and trusted friends. I immediately went up to our boss and started talking to (and with) him. We did not actually discuss the problem but it seemed clear to me that he was in a bad spot too. In a short time the whole situation changed and for the better.

It was a valuable lesson.

Calling Trump awful names and metaphorically spitting on his Wife and family may give some low level temporary satisfaction but it brings us down too. And does nothing to solve the underlying problem.

I'll get off my soapbox now. Regular programming will resume shortly.

I am trying to treat it as a SAT question where you are asked to divine the intention of the author.

Are you suggesting that Trump supporters were once our allies and friends and if we are nice to them they will become our allies and friends again?

Thank you in advance.

That was an arcane reference. Years ago I penned a piece called "An Allegorical Sports Fable." It had to do with playing slow-pitch baseball and breaking a few windows with my republican neighbors.

Most of those neighbors have become democrats since then.

There is enough hate to go around. However there is a difference between hating someone because he or she hates Jews, Muslims, blacks, Hispanics, and glbtq people et cetera and actually hating Jews, Muslims, blacks, Hispanics, and glbtq people et cetera.

The former is hating people for who they are. The latter is hating people for what they do.

Most leaders, from both political parties, at least pay lip service to binding the nation's wounds. Trump pours salt in them. I don't see how this division can end any way other than poorly.

Trump was not ...and I want to piss off the other side. We can't have one party that is given the benefit of the doubt and treated in a traditional bipartisan way(Republicans) ...yet, when the are not in office, they burn the house down and refuse to allow the other side (Democrats) to govern. The GOP behaved in a terrible way and colluded with the Russians and their pet FBI agent to get Trump elected and trash Hillary...Had the GOP treated Obama with a tiny bit of respect and showed any cooperation, it would be different or maybe not...we can not pretend that Trump is business as usual as he begins to round up immigrants, goes after public education, LGTBQ, the safety net, health care and women. I wonder if Germans thought they should give Hitler a chance? The GOP treated Obama horribly...now Trump is about to round people up and put them in detention camps...he talks like Hitler and may be a Russian...spy. He will never by president...and I will tirelessly try to bring him down through calling my congressmen, voting, organizing. There can be no cooperation on any thing...and any Democrat who does so should be primaried and kicked out of office...no more "the Dems do it too"...oh and fuck Donald Trump who is a lying piece of shit and a monster...he is the worst thing that has ever happened to this country and threatens to destroy our Republican...so no I won't waiving the white flag...and you shouldn't either.

dangers of having Trump as president then there will be a constant defensive rift in this country that will prevent any kind of governing. This hateful rhetoric will come again from the other side when the dems come into power. There are real crimes that have been committed by the Trump cabal but when we tie them with hateful name calling we are pushing people into a defensive corner. I want the country to function once this president is gone. I don't want to live in constant state of a near civil war.

I want him gone, and I want the other side to see him for who he is and believe the the investigations when the reports are brought to the public.

Yes, president Obama took insults and lies for 8 years, but where does this end? Is it going to like honor killings where one person from one family is killed so one from the other family is killed.......an endless family feud?
