Here's a screenshot of a comment that was just posted on Corey's GoFundMe page:
https://www.gofundme.com/27-year-old-injured-in-car-accident
Wonder what happened? LOL
Before "Corey" deleted his thread I decided to Google part of his letter to see if it could be found on any other site-- And I found a site that mocked DU for falling for it 'again'.
Do any of y'all know the site conservativeunderground? SarasotaRepub had better look out for Karma-- She's over your tiny dick shoulder, bub!
GoFundMe says that Corey's Facebook page IS NOT verified:

(17,320 posts)It's too bad you took a fair bit of abuse in the process. In circumstances like that, people get emotional because they're very sympathetic, but that's also what the scammers are looking to capitalize on, unfortunately.
Glad you pounded that drum!

Was Andy real?
Just curious.

(115,679 posts)money collected for him tied up so he was unable to get the care he needed and died.
Cavers called Andy Stephenson a scam and were active participants in his death.
Andy was real.

(34,087 posts)regardless of how promptly one can get access to care.
Certainly he needed the money - and certainly the cavers (and freepers, IIRC) gummed up the works so he couldn't get it in a timely fashion. But, knowing what I know about his condition (since it is one of the multiple cancers my daughter is screened for every 6 months), it is unlikely that having the money faster would have changed hte outcome.
uppityperson
(115,679 posts)Ms. Toad
(34,087 posts)not the interference with the funding. I was just clarifying that it was highly unlikely that interference with the funding killed him - as seemed to be being suggested.
uppityperson
(115,679 posts)death. It's a simple concept.
Cavers blocked Andy's chance of getting treatment, increasing his chance of dying. Interfering with funding denied him treatment that may have saved him.
No money>>>>no treatment>>>death.
Money>>>>>treatment>>>>chance of survival.

(26,045 posts)...who might, over the past few years, had a complete change of politics/personality and decided to scam us "for the lulz," or whether it was someone who hacked the account, knowing that the real Corey posted infrequently, and so wouldn't be on to discover the scam until the money had already been collected?
In a way, I hope it was the second one...although I suspect, if so, Corey is going to be in for a big shock the next time he shows up here.

What's going to happen to the 1700 bucks that was on GoFundMe? Is the page still up? Will the users on DU who donated get their money back?

(13,933 posts)Doesn't necessarily make it a scam. Without following closely, it does seem like there was other evidence that this request for funds was not legit. I'm just saying that posts by "Brianna Kirby" and "sarasotarepub" claiming that DUers are patsys is not evidence of anything, except that random right wingers read DU and like to post shit about it. You'd see the same type of posts if it hadn't been a scam.

(8,445 posts)When these fakers do things like this they cause people to become skeptical about ALL fundraisers. It doesn't bother me to be made fun of for being a generous, giving person. I didn't donate to this particular "cause", but I'm sure I've given to some that aren't worthy. And I'll no doubt do it again.

So whoever this is may get a big kick out of scamming us "liberals" but I know the conservatives in my family will give their last nickel to some right wing nutjob preacher or politician because I've seen them do it. We're stuck with a bunch of worthless, except for the silver, commemorative coins my right wing father in law spent thousands of $$ on. Right now I can get about $17 for a silver coin he paid $220 for. This is the crap conservatives spend their money on, the ultimate cavers.

(5,611 posts)scam that was quite blatant (apparently posted all over the website simultaneously -- quickest way to get money before anything could be verified and with a fake link to "Dayton daily news" . To me, verifying the basics of a person asking for money over the INTERNET is just common practice, especially in such a flashy manner (urgent situation that needs donations IMMEDIATELY and within a few hours the poster keeps upping the pressure to donate. Classic scam tactics. People have lost entire life savings b/c of scams like this one as they donate in good faith to a scammer who absolutely doesn't care).
I sincerely hope this is looked into. The site was hacked as we all know, and I don't know why posters who were attempting to verify the scam (which is literally criminal) were criticized. They should be applauded.
Starry Messenger
(32,342 posts)I thought the same thing you did, about the site being hacked so recently.
This could be more malicious behavior from the trolls who did that--the op was right to be suspicious and did good legwork.
No one wants to think ill of a person potentially in need, but as you say, the red flags were all there. People who gave with a generous spirit deserve to know that they can pursue restitution.
