Mar-a-Lago 3, Camp David 0. With Trump as president, is the rustic Md. retreat doomed?

THURMONT, Md. — Dwayne Snurr, a janitor and lifelong resident of this rural, working-class town 60 miles from the White House, was eating chicken wings in a cafe off Main Street last week when he began chewing over a locally important subject: President Trump’s taste in vacations.

“I guess he’s got that place down in Florida,” Snurr said, referring to Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s Palm Beach resort. “When you have a place like that, I have to assume you prefer the beach and nice weather.”

Trump’s Florida compound and his other gold-laden properties have been top of mind lately in Thurmont, where just a few miles up a winding mountain road presidents have vacationed and cajoled world leaders at Camp David — deep in the woods, in cozy cabins, a total anathema to Trump.

“Camp David is very rustic, it’s nice, you’d like it,” Trump said in an interview with a European journalist just before taking office. “You know how long you’d like it? For about 30 minutes.”

White House officials have not said whether Trump plans to use Camp David or, if not, whether he would close the Navy-run facility, which in recent years has cost taxpayers about $8 million a year to operate. Although local officials hope he will visit, they have been given no signals he will, raising concern about the financial and symbolic costs of the president’s getaway tastes.

I hope he stays away from Camp David. It's bad enough he's tainted the White House forever. Vinca Feb 2017 #1

Then he can say, see I saved another 8 million. I feel for the workers. I don't think their jobs are secure.

There is absolutely no evidence Camp David will be closed down.

We have already spent 10 million on Mar a Lago. Will Trump be closing that too?

Force the government to lease it to a Friend of Trumpsky. Bulldoze half of it for a golf course. Spray-paint everything that doesn't move in gold paint and put cut-out images of the Big Rump wearing a coonskin cap in every room. Reopen it as "Camp Trump", renting the cabins at $1000/night. Go bankrupt and stick the government for the cost of un-doing everything he did. On to do the same thing to Mt. Weather.

Camp David is an essential part of our history, so many important events have happened there. It was named after President Eisenhower's grandson, but it was originally converted into a presidential retreat by FDR! And of course President Carter comes to mind. And he was one of our most frugal presidents, but he recognized the value of having such a place for private negotiations - or simply a place for the president (and often his family) to get away. Geez...

I guess if it's not embossed with guilded coverings and garish decorations, then it doesn't meet Mr Trump's high standards.

Not enough gilded furniture or exotic carpets. Outside, there is, of all things, dirt. The Donald doesn't like dirt. It's...well...dirty.

People who visited Camp David with former Presidents spent a lot of time walking around outdoors. The Donald does not like the outdoors, since wind is the enemy of his carefully maintained comb-over.

Camp David is a rustic place. The Donald eschews rusticity, preferring to pretend he is in Versailles, surrounded by cheap Chinese imitation furniture from the Louis XIV period. Camp David has no gold plated toilets or fixtures. The Donald likes the look of gold, no matter how thinly plated on things.

I expect that Donald Trump will never set foot on the grounds at Camp David. He has so many tremendous properties already, where he can show off his execrable taste and sensibilities.
