Why? Because the Supreme Court is now known as the Roberts Court...

And if the mandate had been tossed, the Roberts Court would be viewed by historians as the most politicized in history...Roberts is thinking of his legacy, and he doesn't want historians to view him or his court as simply a tool of right wing politicians.

is enough. Roberts is a corporate tool, but he's no fool, and has a sense of the legacy of the court. A Chief's name is associated with both successes and failures.
