Trump Voters, Your Savior Is Betraying You

Dear Trump Voters,

You’ve been had. President Trump sold you a clunker. Now that he’s in the White House, he’s betraying you — and I’m writing in hopes that you’ll recognize that betrayal and hold him accountable.

Trump spoke to your genuine pain, to the fading of the American dream, and he won your votes. But will he deliver? Please watch his speeches carefully. You’ll notice that he promises outcomes, without explaining how they’ll be achieved. He’s a carnival huckster promising that America will thrive with his snake oil.

“We’re going to win, we’re going to win big, folks,” Trump declared Friday at the CPAC meeting, speaking of his foreign policy.

Great! Problem solved. Next? He then outlined his take on drug trafficking and what will surely be his outcome:

“No good. No good. Going to stop.” Wow! Why didn’t anyone else think of that?

Similarly, all looks rosy for tax outcomes: “We’re going to massively lower taxes on the middle class,” Trump said.

This is one of Kristof's best pieces, but it will fall on deaf ears. Why? Because his supporters don't care about those things or don't care about those things as long as he is sticking it to Jews, glbtq people, African Americans, Hispanics, Muslims, and liberals.

We're losing and losing big. Or in his words - bigly. We've already angered key allies and as long as Trump is in power expect these things to get worse.

Some may have regrets and may voice them. But most are in deep denial or oblivious. They don't care. They are looking out for their own. They are drinking the kool-aid and no matter what you say, they will not acknowledge it. You might as well be talking to the wall.

That's the difference between US and THEM. WE'RE concerned with what happens to everyone; THEY only get concerned when it happens to them.

But at the pace Trump is moving, it won't be long before THEY get hit where they live.

Most of them won't care as long as he takes them away from people they don't like. Remember the scene in Mississippi Burning where Gene Hackman's character tells Willem Dafoe's character his poor dad killed his black neighbor's donkey because he couldn't stand to see a black person have more than him.

Oh--what about Hillary? Not in jail yet, I see. And just where is that Mexican money flowing in to build that wall?

Are they going to believe that America is "great again" just because he says so? Or is reality going to intrude?

Maybe having a "strong" white male in the Oval Office equates to America being great again? What do they think of their big strong guy when he's too chicken to risk being roasted at the Correspondents' Dinner? Oh I know--they will find an excuse for him.

At some point, I hope, they will see that the emperor has no clothes. But no, maybe not--they are authoritarians and he's their Daddy, so they will stay loyal and true!

If not, don't count on Trump voters to get it.

9. This is absolutely true, but we are losing an opportunity to exploit it. Much as I hate to put it

this way, we should be taking a page from Trump's propaganda book. His supporters should not be able to turn around without seeing a billboard, a newspaper ad, a tv spot, with a very pity expression about how he is gutting something that is crucial to them.

There must be 50 Trump supporting groups that he had screwed blatantly in just the last month. They should be being pounded over the head with that so that it begins to seep in.

Hopefully the DNC will take the reins of that.
