Note: I am omitting the first two paragraphs of this story because they could be considered as bashing Democrats which is not my intention. My apologies in that regard, but I thought that remainder of the article was worth reading.
But theres one Democratic senator whom everybody knows and almost everybody likes, irrespective of party, and thats Al Franken, of Minnesota. Franken is well known, of course, not because of his years in the Senate, but for his years on Saturday Night Live, where he often played a character named Al Franken. The character called Al Franken would occasionally say things that a Senate candidate named Al Franken would not. Nor would the Senate candidate Al Franken necessarily want every word he uttered when brainstorming with other writers on S.N.L. to become public. Frankens opponent in his first Senate campaign, in 2008, tried to make an issue of all thisthinking, or at least hoping, that the clean-living people of Minnesota might find the whole business a bit postmodern.
It almost worked. Franken had to go through a recount and a state Supreme Court battle before taking his seat several months late. He was comfortably re-elected in 2014.
This is Al Frankens moment. Four years from now, hell be 69, younger than Trump or Hillary during the 2016 campaign. Four years after that, and hell be too old. As recently as, say, six months ago, I would have said that, however much I might admire Al Franken, the idea of a comedian (a comedian on purpose) as president was beneath the dignity of the United States. But we have learned more recently that nothing is beneath the dignity of the United States. The Trump dispensation changes the rules and opens up the presidency to all sorts of people who previously would have been thought unqualified. Baseball players, philosophers, plumbers, TV commentators. All it takes is $50 million or so and nothing better to do.
I think it will still be necessary, or at least useful, for the candidate who isnt just another political hack to have some independent source of fame or respect, as John McCain had his heroism in Vietnam. When Dr. Ben Carson was introduced to the world as a pediatric neurosurgeonsomeone who cuts open and repairs childrens brainsI thought, how bad could he be, if that is how he devotes his days on earth. But I found out.

(5,754 posts)wonderful family, all American, and he understands a lot of cultures. He can speak to regular folks in plain talk. Plain talk doesn't have to be hate talk.

(23,554 posts)a family legacy to get him in the way many politicians do. He is very well read. On his political radio show the guests often would be impressed that he actually read their books before they came on.
I'm sure the republicans have a lot of video and audio of him doing odd comedy things that could be edited in all sorts of ways. But, they couldn't keep him out of the senate.

(41,832 posts)He'll be close to 70 in 2020.
I'm not saying this because of worries about mental acuity either. ( I'm 68)
Anyway... 2018!! not even going to think about 2020.

(41,832 posts)I'd like someone younger. I don't care how old Trump is. It doesn't even figure into what I would like to see.

(13,390 posts)to have a president who is a decade or so younger than the end of average life expectancy and age of onset for a wide range of ordinary conditions that reveal themselves later in life.

(28,867 posts)He's not one to take guff or nonsense.
We need that!

Haha, enough lame jokes. I like the idea of Al Franken as prez. If the GOP can elect a joke, we can elect a comedian. Plus Franken is wicked smart.

(42,282 posts)And what we're going thru is a 'me!me!me!' presidency, so an Al Franken presidency following that makes sense...
Loved him on SNL; it takes brains to do really good humor. Love him more as a senator; he's still got the brains!

(13,598 posts)Americans have always appreciated humor from their politicians. Showing why it was okay for a comedian to run for the senate. "From the wry wit of Abraham Lincoln, to the self effacing humor of Ronald Reagan and the hilarious slapstick of George Bush!" Then showing a bunch of Bush bloopers. I bet he wrote that one.

(146,317 posts)However, I suspect that his almost legendary modesty will lead him to decline to run for that position. I've met him a few times, and believe that he will not seek that office. As one of the Senators from my adopted home state of Minnesota, he is doing an excellent job of representing the state and all of the nation in that office.
Everyone's welcome to suggest to him that he run for President. I doubt that he'll do so, though.

(6,496 posts)I think his sense of humor would be an asset to democrats and that would help us win. He has experience in government, but everyone knows he is not a "career politician" because he was very successful comedic writer before he got involved in politics.

(13,912 posts)Is that he is Jewish.. The right wing evangelicals/christians would go absolutely Fookne nutz... A catholic was bad enough, a black even worse in their eyes. It would be a VERY nasty fight I believe. I also believe he would be a very good prez..

(19,479 posts)That's an even greater handicap. Put those two factors together, and he's unelectable.
I think he'd be a great president, but I also think there's no chance we'll find out.

(100,081 posts)They should get no say in political discourse for centuries. They gave us Donald Trump. That is the biggest colossal fuck up they could possibly do. It's time for something new.

(63,221 posts)with the right-wing evangelicals. It's unfortunate that people are so bigoted, because I think he is probably the most intelligent, thoughtful politician out there and would do a wonderful job. As an atheist, I have no problem with it.
