Rick Santorum: Millions of Americans with preexisting conditions are scammers stealing health care

CNN contributor Rick Santorum suggested on Sunday that it was a mistake to guarantee health care coverage for people with preexisting conditions because “millions” of them were scamming insurance companies.

During a panel discussion about health care reform, Santorum argued that President Barack Obama’s health care reform law had damaged the health care system to the point that the Republican lawmakers could not “repeal and replace” it at the same time.

“Pre-existing conditions, though it’s very popular,” the former GOP senator opined, “what the reality is today that thousands, maybe approaching millions of Americans, are paying nine months for insurance. Why? Because you pay for your insurance for nine months, there’s a provision in Obamacare that says you can’t be thrown off your plan for three months.”

“So, you stop paying in September until the end of the year,” he continued. “You have a right to guaranteed [coverage for] preexisting conditions. You can buy a new plan in January. So people are paying nine months for 12 months of care. And it’s happening more and more and more as people get the gig.”

“Obamacare is a failure! But you’re going to need 60 votes to change preexisting conditions and other things to make the system work. And that’s the problem of repeal and replacing is you can’t do it because it’s a broken system.”

Santorum, however, offered no evidence that “millions of Americans” were using Obamacare’s protections for people with preexisting conditions to scam health insurance companies.

millions of Americans scamming healthcare through Obamacare. That statistic courtesy of the Bureau of Rick Santorum's ass. In 2006, when he was campaigning for his senate reelection, he stated that we had found the weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.

Last week, I had a minor -- yet extremely painful -- surgery last week just because I like having surgery and wasting insurance company money.

I'm sure all those people with chronic medical conditions are just gaming the system, Dick...err Rick?! This type of attitude about gaming and taking advantage of insurance illustrates clearly the motivations of the GOP, protect insurance companies profits, above all. This is why we must make efforts to shift towards Medicare for all.

Oh, and Rick?

If you have a pre-existing condition, then by definition you need health care. It is Republicans trying to scam fellow Americans out of their health care that is the real problem.

You don't pay, you aren't covered. Sure, you can reapply for coverage in January but if you don't pay for three months you aren't covered for three months. Has nothing to do with pre existing conditions.

How can people this stupid be on tv?

that false healthcare insurance claims fall under the category of "insurance fraud". When suspicious claims are filed, they are investigated, and if fraud occurred, criminal charges are filed.

Fraud occurs everywhere. Are we going to shut down Wall Street because of fraud? No. Investigate and file charges.

Dick Scrotum is a stupid person.

could fix it by either offering greater subsidies (my preference), or allowing insurers to cancel the policy for non-payment. That's assuming GOPers don't get smart and at least offer a Public Option, which is not going to happen.

His big allegation is that people are paying for 9 months of insurance and getting 12 months by paying only through September, using the grace period, and then enrolling in a new plan starting in January.

The problem for Santorum is that the 90-day grace period does not excuse payment of the premium - or get you free health care during those last 3 months of the year. If you do not pay your premium by the 90th day, your health insurance is terminated retroactively to the first premium you missed. In other words, all that "free" health care you got now comes out of your pocket at the non-discounted self-pay rate.

I am faking getting bashed into a pinto station wagon while on a moped. Sanitarium is an asshole. I would love it if I could work and support myself and not have these damn disabilities. I really loath people who say I am faking because living with disabilities is a bitch. I am scared to death that that attitude will get everything I have taken away because I am sure he would take one look at me and call me a liar because you can not tell just by looking or talking to me for a few minutes that I am disabled because mine goes deeper than that.
