Statement from CFO Jeff Atwaters office, 10:10 a.m:
TALLAHASSEEFlorida Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater today released the following statement regarding the U.S. Supreme Court ruling the individual mandate of the 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act unconstitutional.
Todays landmark ruling by the Supreme Court upholds two distinctly American principles outlined in our Constitutionindividual freedom and limited government.
The Supreme Court carefully considered the constitutionality and appropriate legal arguments associated with this overreaching piece of legislation. Ultimately, the rejection of the individual mandate is more than a legal determination; it is an upholding of the American way of governing and the ideals of individual freedom and libertythe fundamental principles that shaped our nation and will continue to guide us into the future.
The magnitude of such government intrusion would have been a significant departure from the limited government envisioned in our founding documents. Government interference in the marketplace would have had a devastating impact on free market competitive forces, consumer choice, and individual investmentundermining the American economy and further increasing dependence on entitlements.
I am proud of the role Florida has played in defending our Constitution, protecting the individual freedoms of the American people and affirming the limited role of government our founders designed.

(61,729 posts)1. Their seems to have been a leak from the Supreme Court.
I interpret this all to mean that somebody at the Supreme Court was sure that they had the votes to strike down, and Roberts's vote was a surprise to them. I wonder if that is true. It's what it looks like to me.

And then jumped the gun when the networks got it wrong and sent out their response.
I seem to recall reading an article that someone posted three different canned responses to their website a few days ago without realizing it.

(61,729 posts)3. That makes more sense. The decisions are written weeks or months in advance.
It would be surprising if somebody changed their mind at the last minute. It is also surprising to me to see so many people go with the wrong canned response, though. It made me wonder if there really was last-minute vote swapping. The Supreme Court should not behave that way, but they've done worse lately.
