Taoiseach Enda Kenny urges Trump to help undocumented Irish living in US

Ireland’s prime minister asked Trump to ‘remove burden’ for estimated 50,000 Irish citizens believed to be illegally in America at a luncheon at US Capitol

Ireland’s prime minister, Enda Kenny, has urged Donald Trump to help Irish people living in the US illegally, saying they just want to “make America great”.

Kenny said: “We would like this to be sorted. It would remove a burden of so many people that they can stand out in the light and say, now I am free to contribute to America as I know I can. And that’s what people want.”

Kenny also urged Trump to consider providing more work visas “for young people who want to come to America and to work here”.

Meanwhile, Mike Pence sends a secret message to his White Supremacist friends

Mr Pence also recalled his Irish grandfather Richard Michael Cawley, who emigrated to the US from County Sligo in 1923 and spoke with pride about his Irish heritage.

He added that he had thought about his grandfather during inauguration day in January.

"The truth is that whatever honours I will receive over the course of my service as vice president, to receive an honour in the name of the Irish people and my Irish heritage will count as chief among," he said.

"All that I am and all that I will ever be and all the service that I will ever make is owing to my Irish heritage."

Mr Kenny presented Mr Pence with a roll book from a County Sligo school that included the name of his grandfather.

He said Ireland "took special pride in the fact that, for the first time in the history of this great republic, one Irish American has succeeded another in the office of vice president".

A number of other Irish American politicians basically called Pence a bullshitter - only pays lip service to Ireland, did nothing over the last 25 years to help the peace process. As much of an asshole that Peter King is, he is respected for the work he did for the peace process.

'That the Irish -- of all people -- would shower this immigrant-bashing President with shamrocks is appalling. That the Irish would pin tri-colors to the lapels of his white supremacist cronies, shocks the conscience.

A few months ago, Enda Kenny said Donald J. Trump was "racist and dangerous." Now, the great immigrant round-up has begun and he wants to have a beer with him. This is an appalling abdication of conscience and unbecoming of the more noble traditions of the Irish people.

This isn't about the St. Patrick's party, it's about the people -- immigrant and refugee people everywhere. And it's about the true character of the United States -- a country that received millions of Irish immigrants to our shores.

America never turned its back on Ireland. America stepped up big time for the Irish Peace Process. And as Ireland was once "supported by her exiled children in America," we need Ireland now to stand with us. Stand with us against the violence of moms and dads being ripped away from their children by immigrant round-up squads. Stand with us against immigrant internment camps, against religious identification cards, against travel bans on our Muslim neighbors. #NoShamrocks'

Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Make no mistake, Ireland would ALWAYS prefer there to be a Democratic President in the WH.

I fear O'Malley is playing as much politics as Enda Kenny had to play today. Last year Kenny gave his opinion of Trump as racist and dangerous but today, he had to do his duty as our Prime Minister, as unpalatable as it was.

Miriam Lord: Media goes wild for Trump but the feeling is not mutual

President is quick to call time on photo call, but not before an awkward question

Worth a read...

For two comical, chaotic minutes, pandemonium reigned in the Oval Office.

It was not what we expected and yet . . .

And yet, when Donald met Enda, it gloriously turned out to be everything we expected.

“Unprecedented” gasped White House regulars in the immediate aftermath, aghast at the scenes they had just witnessed.

The vast majority of people in the US illegally came here legally on a VISA and overstayed their time, and never left when they were supposed to. The vast majority of them are Asian. They work here, have kids, send their kids to our schools, buy homes, and somehow no one, (ICE or Border Patrol), ever consider kicking in their door, harassing them on the street, asking for their papers in Arizona, or raiding their place of employment.
