it's entirely possible that comey deliberately screws up the investigation.

I wouldn't put it past this administration for him to lie and Comey still asked Sessions for permission.

Comey acknowledged there is an investigation, with the DOJ's blessing. Session most certainly, absolutely, would have denied such a blessing.

No need to go into tinfoil territory when Occam's Razor can handle the task just fine.
