I'm sorry I did not include that smilie in the first posting of this.

(146,288 posts)My wife streams stuff from Hulu, though. I'll ask her if she's planning to watch it. We could get it on Google TV. We never use that device, but it's plugged into our TV in the living room, so we could, I guess.

(83,751 posts)I just posted below including a link to the Op I did a few days ago. This book, 35 years old is real today.
She has worth only if she can breed. If not she is sent to the colonies and is hung.

(1,901 posts)women should be forced to carry every pregnancy to term regardless of what it does to her, or her opinion on the matter, because so many wish to adopt their children, and thus a woman is merely breeding stock. Especially if she is poor.

Carry a dead fetus to term. Holy shit!

(1,901 posts)But no, it wasn't Texas, where the guy who sponsored it said this that "suffering is part of th human condition since sin entered the world." So sadistically torturing women and their families was totally fine.

That Texas thing was from 2015, this Iowa one seems identical, which can only mean there is a bill mill in operation here. ALEC or their sadistic, misogynistic sibling AUL.
These are the guys who were trying to make it a justifiable homicide to murder doctors.
These people truly think this work of fiction was a guidebook. There are Trumpkins running around seething about how this miniseries is an attack on Cheetolini.

(146,288 posts)I have added the smilie. The religious right actually would love to see The Handmaid's Tale become real, and Trump would go right along with them.
Sorry for the confusion.

(1,901 posts)to make that poor joke. If you recall, Offred and her fellow handmaidens (dressed in red) were not willing supporters of their government, they were brainwashed and forced. The women in blue were the elite, the ones who went along with whatever the men in charge said. Serena Joy would be akin to "Mother" Pence.

They are not trump supporters. They are women. They were raped and made a slave of the state. Breeders.
synergie
(1,901 posts)why it's so offensive to use the women in RED to make that attempt at a joke.
Find some footage of women in Blue, and you're a bit closer. The women in red are enslaved, brainwashed and literally used as breeding stock to be raped by the Trump and GOP like figures.
I'm hoping you were just trying to make a funny and stumbled because you didn't know any better, but this is extremely offensive to anyone who has read the book and understands what is going on in it.

(83,751 posts)Onto the Texas Senate Floor in Protest!
Women Wore Handmaids Tale Robes To The Texas Senate Floor
On Monday, the Texas Senate considered several abortion-related bills, including Senate Bill 415, a regulation that would effectively ban a safe and common procedure used for second trimester abortions, which anti-choice legislators have taken to calling a dismemberment abortion ban. It passed and will now head to the House.
The Senate also inched forward with SB 25 ― a bill that would effectively allow doctors to lie to pregnant women if they detect a fetal anomaly and are concerned their patients might opt for abortion. It will likely head for a final vote on the floor this week.
But in the Senate chambers on Monday, a group of Texas women were having none of it. The activists arrived decked out in full red robes, an homage to characters in The Handmaids Tale, Margaret Atwoods classic (and distressingly relevant) feminist tome.

They march for their right to an abortion in a second trimester. Also a bill that would effectively allow doctors to lie to pregnant women if they detect a fetal anomaly and are concerned their patients might opt for abortion.
They marched for their RIGHT NOT TO ALLOW A DOCTOR TO LIE TO THEM IF THEY DETECT A FETAL ANOMALY.

(146,288 posts)It represents the goals of the religious right for this country. They would like to make The Handmaid's Tale real, and Trump would go right along with them.
I'm sorry if some people missed the sarcasm.
synergie
(1,901 posts)I get that you were being sarcastic, and making a joke.
Are there no stills of the wives in blue? Maintains your sarcastic point, more accurate and provokes less of a visceral rejection than the handmaids do.
This is on par with with slaves at auction being tagged with a " A Rally for Andrew Jackson".
Just crosses over into that icky, visceral "No, NO and NO" territory, you know?
I know you probably didn't mean it to be offensive, it just kind of is. Every woman I know who has ever read this book has the same reaction to the depiction of these handmaidens.
The GOP has literally been using this book as a how-to manual for years, and we've been noting the similarities and their goals. This isn't just a book for us, it's a frightening reality that we see them marching towards. Kinda overwhelms the sarcasm you intended here.
Can you look into replacing the images? I think you're missing just why people are reacting so negatively here.

(146,288 posts)dystopian fiction. It tied so well into the nature of fundamentalist Christianity and what they might actually do if they were allowed to that it was quite frightening. If we are not successful in restoring some sort of balance in federal government soon, we may be facing something not so dissimilar to the situation in that novel.
