Meanwhile, in France

Marine Le Pen meets with Vladimir Putin on visit to Moscow
06 April 2017

French presidential candidate Marine Le Pen met with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday as the first round of voting nears, pledging closer cooperation if she's elected.

French presidential candidate Marine Le Pen tried to reassure voters about her political plans, saying she doesn't want chaos and is ready to wait until late this year to begin talks to pull France out of the euro. She is against imposing sanctions on Russian Federation over Kremlin's role in the Ukraine conflict.

Reuters also indicated that the meeting reveals that, despite the controversy of Russia's alleged involvement in the US presidential election, Putin is "not shying away from actions that could influence foreign elections". US intelligence agencies have accused Moscow of hacking to interfere in the 2016 USA election.

Le Pen's anti-immigration and anti-EU platform appeals to the Kremlin, which has postured as a defender of conservative national values against Western globalization.

Le Pen supported Russia's annexation of Crimea and has called for resulting sanctions by the European Union to be dropped.

"We all live in very hard conditions".

She openly backs his 2014 annexation of Crimea that prompted the European Union to impose sanctions.

In addition, Marine Le Pen spoke about the stupidity of sanctions imposed on Russian Federation. Speaking with Mr. Putin, Le Pen said as ISIS terrorists killed three Russian soldiers at a military base in Chechnya: "the fight against terrorism can only be truly effective if the largest nations stand side by side and join forces".

Le Pen is expected to be among the top two vote getters on April 23 who move on to a presidential runoff on May 7.

The Kremlin, meanwhile, has officially denied a report by satirical newspaper Le Canard Enchaine that Fillon acted as a go-between to set up a meeting between Putin and Lebanese pipeline magnate Fouad Makhzoumi. Mr Fillon has called the accusation a "shameful lie". French law doesn't bar foreigners from contributing in its political campaigns.

"The market reaction would be very negative since re-denomination risks have been priced in only to a very modest extent", said Frederik Ducrozet, an economist at Banque Pictet & Cie in Geneva, who expects the euro to drop below parity after a Le Pen victory.

Le Pen is also facing legal investigations around party finances.

For populist nationalists like her, President Putin has the appeal of a strong authoritarian leader who puts interests of country ahead of all else, our correspondent adds.

For his part, Putin said he was keeping lines of communication open with a potential world leader. "I believe it's a delusion".

He also appeared to disavow suspicions that the Russian government had interfered in the French elections.

Macron's aides claimed in February that Russian groups were interfering with his campaign soon after a spike in social media claims that Macron is gay. There is little doubt Russian Federation would be happy to deal with a President Le Pen. (That's a family affair: Le Pen's father, Jean-Marie Le Pen, rose to political prominence on the same controversial platforms of his daughter).
