You want to feel bad and dispair..Well I have felt worse in 1972..but things got much better..

PLEASE read to the bottom if you can..there is a point to all of this..

Nixon....538 electoral votes
McGovern ...17 electoral votes.....one state..Mass. plus 3 from DC..equals 17

Worst lost in modern history....also...Democratic Party was totally broke..We had to have a TV fundraiser to keep from going broke. I worked phones on that..I worked for Mc Govern..I voted for Mc Govern. He was correct about getting us out of the Viet Nam War...right away. and Nixon..well Nixon was a crook in more than one way....so......what happened 4 years later???....

After the biggest loss in modern history, guess who won? A governor from Georgia..Jimmy Carter...remember?
He is still alive, and was responsible for saving more lives than Bush killed. Carter proposed and implemented the first seat belt requirement in autos. He gave it a lot of lead time, to prevent total outcries..and those laws went into effect..in 83 or 84........Other safety requirements followed but Carter started it, and was/is the leader in that regard.....In 1979...53,000 Deaths on the highways.
In 2016 34,000 Deaths on the highways....
40 per cent reduction of deaths on highways...
40 per cent increase in population of the United States.. an incredible
accomplishment by the President who followed Nixon/Ford..

Since I worked for Mc Govern, and watched the election very closely, I remember how it felt after his almost total loss. But.........we did not give up, and I recommend to all.................DO NOT GIVE UP..

...............YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT GOOD THE FUTURE MIGHT BRING..
sure..we know about the bad...but who could believe that the next President..started a program that ended up, after additional add ons, saving tens of thousands of lives ....think about it ...??
............................and DON'T EVER GIVE UP...........!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

a good chance,,,NO ONE could imagine that Carter would save as many lives as his program eventually did..In fact, many did not want to wear seat belts in the beginning. Now. everyone buckles up, with the shoulder harness as part of the deal. We just do, and in the back seat..same thing..Especially if there are children back there.

It was a rough time. We had a congress that was actually a congress of the people and not just the corporations, millionaires and billionaires. The government did have checks and balances then, which have essentially disappeared. It is going to be a very rough next decade.

I was so excited and then mad when he lost.

Also, it's when I realized the young don't vote. No one I knew voted.

I was twenty-two, and I could finally vote.
That summer, I'd worked as a Democratic volunteer to get McGovern elected, because I'd survived the beatdowns at the 1968 Chicago convention and KNEW we had to keep those conservative warmongers out of power.
I haven't stopped, since.

could barely bring myself to read anything today...but you are right. You never know what will happen. Senator Wyden's aide told me recently that there are a lot of really good people working on this behind the scenes, and stay hopeful.

and other, similar landslide losses is why we have super delegates. Republicans who did not want trump wished that they had had super delegates.

I worked for McGovern, too, and voted for him. I had spent enough time around politics to know that he would lose.

I had my doubts about Carter. I think a lot of people crossed over and voted for him because they were tired of repubbie corruption. Then, they voted for Reagan. The electorate has a short memory. That is why we must never let up, and GOTV.

...is that, back then, we had a Democratic congress that was willing to fully investigate presidential misdeeds. If the Republicans had been in control of congress, Nixon would have probably served out his term -- and been succeeded by John Connolly.

13. One big difference: Social Media

People spend all their time on Social Media, get their news "fake or not" from Social Media, get trigger happy after they read something on Social Media, shut off their brains - or what is supposed to be inside their skulls - for critical thinking.

We are supposed to have the lowest percentage of working age people actually working. No, twitting and watching on tiny screens, and playing Pokeman - or whatever, being oblivious to other cars and people around you, determining that laws are for others.

I think that Social Media will finally achieve what years of wars and famine and drought and flood have never achieved - finally bring what we consider civilization to the end, and we will not even notice it until it is too late.

P.S. It was Nixon who established the EPA; who opened the door to China, who, today, would be considered liberal by the deplorables and their leaders.
