Hackintosh: it's a thing (Macintosh computers made by installing OsX on generic hardware)

http://www.hackintosh.com/

Please note that Apple does not support Mac OS X on non-Apple hardware and installing Mac OS X on non-Apple hardware may be illegal in your country. Hackintosh.com, and the author thereof, shall not be held responsible or liable, under any circumstances, for any damages resulting from the use or inability to use the linked information. As far as I know, hackintosh is not illegal in the USA. It does violate the EULA of OsX, I think.

but he's very active in the custom gaming community, so he's always fiddling around with stuff like this. (Custom gamers remove some components from one video game and replace them with components from another to make hybrid games.) He's also an avid retrogamer. These niche geek communities have existed for years, and they do some pretty cool stuff.

I saw it at some computer fair in Southern California. Furtive deals were happening in the background, people skulking about with ROM and disks as if they were selling cannabis.

The price of an Atari ST was nearly half that of a Mac, a similar situation to today's PCs vs. Mac.

I've got a Mac SE/30 and LC II emulated on my Linux desktop but I don't feel like I'm cheating because I've got the actual machines in my garage.
