Excelsior Scholarship recipients will be required to maintain a grade point average "necessary for the successful completion of their course work," the governor's office said. Colleges typically require students to maintain a 2.0 grade point average to avoid academic probation or dismissal from the institution.

Students also must live and work in New York after graduating from college. The length of the requirement will depend on how long they received the scholarship for while attending a CUNY or SUNY school.
