Nobodys got to use the Internet: A GOP lawmakers response to concerns about Web privacy

"Facebook is not comparable to an ISP. I do not have to go to Facebook,” the town hall attendee told Rep. F. James Sensenbrenner Jr. (R-Wis.). “I do have one provider. … I have one choice. I don’t have to go on Google. My ISP provider is different than those providers.”

In response, Sensenbrenner, who voted to scrap the Federal Communications Commission’s privacy rules that were set to take effect at the end of this year, said:

“Nobody’s got to use the Internet. … And the thing is that if you start regulating the Internet like a utility, if we did that right at the beginning, we would have no Internet. … Internet companies have invested an awful lot of money in having almost universal service now. The fact is is that, you know, I don’t think it’s my job to tell you that you cannot get advertising for your information being sold. My job, I think, is to tell you that you have the opportunity to do it, and then you take it upon yourself to make that choice. … That’s what the law has been, and I think we ought to have more choices rather than fewer choices with the government controlling our everyday lives.”

It sure makes a lot of essential things in life easier.

Internet access makes getting a job MUCH easier. In fact it's probably unavoidable. Just try walking into any store and asking for a job. Odds are, they're going to direct you to their website.

More cluelessness from our "representatives."

What they said here is true. You can choose not to use Google, Facebook or any of the other online services but to use the internet in any way at all, you must be a client of an ISP.

The only way for you to NOT have your privacy sold to the highest bidder is to not use a "universal" service. In other words, they want your every move to be monitored. Just think about all the people they can target for speaking out against the government, watching porn, visiting sites like this, talking about protesting. It's like they're encouraging the masses to abandon the internet so they can turn it into a luxury that only the wealthy can have. The next step will be internet cafes that are expensive and highly censored and monitored.

Do they really think people are that fucking stupid to not see what they're trying to do?

People do many required things online. My nursing license can only be renewed online. Period. Most jobs are applied for online. A lot of things like Social Security applications are directed toward being online, and many people file their taxes online. He probably logs on occasionally, but I bet he has other people doing everything on the computer for him.

FYI, many schools use the internet to communicate with parents and get school assignments.
