Well I learned a lesson today...

I live in a very small and very conservative town in Michigan. Threre is a local election coming up in August and the person who has been County Treasurer since the 1980's is up for reelection and actually has an opponent for the first time in a while. I dont pay attention to local politics, its just an entrenched old boys network. Well, this guy comes up to my house wanting to put a sign up. I was in a good mood, my daughter was having a lemonade stand in front of us so I was very kind to the guy. I listened to him, asked some questions and thought we had a nice conversation. I said I appreciated all his years of service, and why not, put up a sign. I followed it up with we would not agree on most things since I am a Democrat. He looked at me like I killed a baby, said well he believes people have a right to what they believe and then left without putting the sign up and went to the neighbors house.

I honestly have no interest in this guy losing his job, was giving hime the benefit of the doubt that he has done good by our county and he just shit on my appreciation.

We've been reduced to hostile tribalism and it seems to be getting more ingrained as time goes on.

You were kind and generous to him. He was rude to you.

I remember a time when I respected the Republican Party. I hate to admit it now, but I even voted for a few Republicans in the past. I will never do that again.

Over the years the Republican Party has become a powerful political force that espouses moralistic attacks for the sole purpose of winning. My respect for the Republican Party is now gone, not just over political policy or issues, but also over political strategy. Why? Because of the hypocrisy. There are no innocent politicians. They have all compromised their integrity at some point. Politicians must compromise on issues and legislation or nothing would be accomplished. But political parties have an obligation to represent their beliefs and their philosophies with honesty so that Americans can cast their votes with confidence. Years ago the Republican Party chose a tactical path of duplicity. They chose power over integrity. Honor ceased to matter. And now winning is the only thing to them.

To me the worst aspect of what they have become is compounded by their willingness to build their power by falsely accusing the Democratic Party of the very things they themselves were guilty of.

I could be wrong but it seems like he interpreted you telling him you were a democrat as you didn't want the sign.

But It just felt sad that I was trying to be generous and open minded and that was his response. In truth I won't vote and do not really want any sign so I should just stop whining about it.
