Economic self interest. One of the key points of economic theory is that people will never intentionally do something against their own self interest. Fighting climate change will require immense financial sacrifices from everyone, and a pullback in our standard of living.

People love science when it's making them money or developing a cool new tech device for them. People don't love it so much when it says "Look people, we need to make some big sacrifices to deal with this issue".
