(58,785 posts)This time it sent me to the fridge to see if I might have a cucumber and what else I could toss with it. Unfortunately it was just a pair of squash that need stuffing...

(30,481 posts)I love my veggies. I've almost removed red meat from my diet along with some other foods. I've become a kale eating progressive. It just feels right. lol Squash... mmmmm. I'll still belly up to a muffuletta, burger, or steak on occasion.

(58,785 posts)It'll be zucchini stuffed with itself and sauteed fish tonight. A green salad because I've been overdoing the white stuff.
Kale-eating progressive. Lol. You and our DIL are hearing the same inaudible piping, except she has always preferred almost all veggies raw. I can always feed her salad but have a continual urge to toss in a little grass with the herbs to see if she picks up on it. We do meatless alllmost once a week and every time my husband comments, oh, no meat? And since I insist on abusing him with arugula, he's taken a firm stand against kale, so that's probably about as culinarily progressive as we'll get here.
Still craving a cucumber salad. Maybe it was something about the video. Oh, well.

(52,209 posts)i've heard plenty of other complaints, particularly the typical complaint about veggies, not being filling enough, or not liking the texture of the seeds. and i understand not liking the taste of other veggies, say, broccoli.
but cukes are basically crunchy water. maybe not for everyone, but saying cukes taste awful seems to me like saying water tastes awful.

(5,324 posts)Tomatoes, carrots, celery, squash, eggplant, potatoes, beans, peas... you name it... but for some reason I just can't stand the taste of cucumbers and their sweet cousins, watermelons. Just too weird.
I do eat cucumbers and watermelons whenever my boyfriend decides to buy some. I just don't really like both of them.
All those other vegetables/fruits? Great stuff! Cauliflower tastes somewhat boring, but broccoli is great.

(6,913 posts)To me, cucumbers have a distinct and unpleasant taste. And I just won't eat watermelon.

(63,221 posts)but then again, I am one of those people who drinks about two gallons of water a day. It's so interesting how people's tastes can vary so widely. I could eat watermelon until I pass out! lol
greymattermom
(5,754 posts)but don't like watermelon because it tastes like cucumbers. With sugar added. Who would put sugar on cucumbers?

(52,209 posts)they just seem soggy to me, it's an unpleasant texture. cukes are nice and firm.
i'm fine with watermelon juice in one of those mixed juice drinks, i'm fine with the taste.

(4,492 posts)It was one of those things I was forced to eat as a child that I won't go near as an adult (in fact they smell so strong to me, I'd rather not be in the same room as someone eating one).
To those who don't think they smell-- go to the bath aisle of any given store (drugstore, etc) and tell me how many cucumber scented products there are.

(52,209 posts)most "scented" or "flavored" products don't have the same smell as the actual thing, it's just someone decided that this was close enough and cheap enough to manufacture, and eventually people accepted that "scent" or "flavor" as the equivalent to the real thing.
in the case of banana scent or flavoring, it is actually the very same chemical in actual bananas, because it happens to be very easy to manufacture cheaply, but many others are just plain different. to me, cherry "scent" or "flavor" is nothing at all like actual cherries, for instance.
in the case of cucumbers, i'll agree that the real things have a scent; but the artificial scent is, at a minimum, way, way more intense than the real thing.

(65,013 posts)They're more expensive, but i've heard that the seeds cause that for many people, and that it doesn't happen with the seedless version.
My wife says they cause burping and when she uses the seedless version (say on a hot dog, 'cuz you know, Chicago) it doesn't happen.

(11,589 posts)They are great as pickles, as a member of salad, including cucumber salad w/ and w/o sour cream.
I also love them in a tomato and cuke salad. I love them as a part of a refreshing cocktail and, as some say - as a refreshing cock tail.
